How this site is funded

Affiliate commission, and nothing else. Here is exactly how it works, what we refuse, and what it does and does not influence.

Last updated

The short version

Vent & Vane earns a commission when you buy a product through a link on this site, at no extra cost to you. That is how the site is paid for. There is no subscription, no paywall, no sponsored content and no advertising.

Amazon Associates

Vent & Vane is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

Our Amazon tracking tag is ventandvane-20. At the time of writing Amazon is the only retailer we earn from - no other affiliate network is joined, and no link on this site is built for a program we have not joined.

How the links work

Every buy button on this site points at an on-site address beginning /go/, which redirects to the retailer with our tracking tag attached. That exists so a retailer can be changed in one configuration entry rather than by rewriting content, and so we can count buy-clicks in our own analytics.

Those links carry rel="sponsored nofollow noopener", which is the markup Google asks for on commercial links, and the /go/ path is excluded from our sitemap and disallowed in robots.txt. None of that is optional and all of it is checkable.

What we refuse

  • Free products. None have been accepted and none would be. We have never handled any of the units on this site.
  • Paid placement. Position in a roundup is not for sale at any price.
  • Sponsored posts. No page here has been paid for by a manufacturer or retailer.
  • Manufacturer review of copy. No brand sees a page before it publishes and no brand has ever asked us to change one.

What commission does not influence

The commission rate is effectively the same across the products we cover, so there is no financial reason to prefer one over another - and even where rates differ, the ranking criteria on how we pick are applied without reference to them.

The practical evidence is on the pages themselves. Every pick carries a “skip this if” naming the buyer it is wrong for. Several pages tell you that a unit’s coverage claim is well ahead of what its own published figures support. One page tells you that the cheapest fix for white dust is to buy different water, which earns us nothing at all. A site optimizing for commission would not be written that way.

Prices

Prices on this site come from an automated daily refresh against the retailer and are shown with the date they were checked. When we do not have a current price, the button reads Check price rather than showing an old number. Prices change constantly and the retailer’s page is always the authority - what you see there at checkout is the price, not what we last recorded.

Per-page disclosure

Every page that carries affiliate links also carries a short disclosure above the first one, rather than relying on this page alone. Every buy button is marked #ad and links back here.

Questions

If anything above is unclear, or you think a page reads as though commission influenced it, write to info@ventandvane.com. That is a genuinely useful thing to be told and we would rather hear it.
