What a humidifier costs to own

Every humidifier review in this category compares purchase prices. Not one of the competitors we fetched publishes what the machine costs after that: the wicks, the water, the watt-hours. Over a five-year ownership those can exceed what you paid for the unit, and on some models they exceed it several times over.

This hub adds them up. Every figure is computed in front of you from a source we can cite, and where we do not have a source you will see us say so rather than fill the gap.

The three running costs

Why we do not print filter prices

You will notice that the cost pages on this site give you multipliers rather than dollar totals for consumables. That is deliberate. Prices for filters move constantly, and this build has no live price feed connected - the Amazon Creators API credentials are empty in the environment that built it, so the price layer is empty and every buy button on the site currently reads Check price.

We could print a remembered price. We are not going to. A number you cannot verify is worth less than no number, and the multiplier is the part that is actually ours: nobody else publishes how many wicks a heating season consumes.

Filters per season

Four of the six filtered units in our set publish no replacement interval at all on their product pages. That is not a research failure on our part, it is a gap on theirs, and it means a buyer cannot compute the running cost of the machine before purchase. It is the single strongest argument for a filter-free unit and the reason that comparison is on this site at all.

Electricity, which is easier to pin down

Watts are published, tariffs are published, and the arithmetic is one line. We use the US average residential price of 18.34 cents per kilowatthour, June 2026, from the EIA's Electric Power Monthly.

The shape of the answer

• A cool-mist ultrasonic unit is close to free to run and has no filter bill. Its hidden cost is distilled water, if you have hard water and object to white dust.
• An evaporative unit costs a little more in electricity, produces no white dust on any water, and has a wick bill nobody will quantify for you before you buy.
• A warm-mist unit is the only type where electricity is the dominant cost, and by a wide margin.
• A ducted whole-house unit has the highest install cost and by far the lowest running cost: one or two Water Panels a season, a 24 VAC transformer, and no reservoir to maintain. The break-even.

Put together over five years, those differences reorder the purchase decision substantially - a cheap filtered unit can end up more expensive than a costly filter-free one. That is worked through in full on the five-year total.
