Humidifier sizing, in gallons per day

The unit that matters is gallons per day. Almost nobody publishes it, most buyers are given tank capacity instead, and that single substitution is why so many people end up with a machine too small for the room.

Almost every humidifier sold in the United States is described by the size of its tank. Six liters. Four gallons. Two point five liters. A tank is a reservoir. It tells you how often you will refill the thing, and it tells you nothing whatsoever about whether the machine can hold humidity in your room.

The number that answers that question is daily output: how many gallons of water the unit actually puts into the air over 24 hours. It is the only figure that can be compared against a room, and it is the figure the category almost never prints. Of the eleven units in our product set, three publish a daily output. The other eight publish a tank capacity, a run time at the quietest setting, and a square-footage claim, and leave the buyer to assume those three describe the same machine at the same moment. They do not.

The rate in step 3 is derived from Aprilaire’s own published capacity-and-coverage pairs, which are the only ones in our set tied to the residential sizing standard. It describes a tightly constructed home. Nobody publishes a multiplier for a drafty one and we have not invented one, so treat this as a floor rather than a ceiling. Where the number comes from.

Where the number comes from

There is a standard for this. AHRI Guideline F, Selection, Installation and Servicing of Residential Humidifiers, is the document that governs residential humidifier sizing in the US. We could not obtain its text: ahrinet.org returned HTTP 403 to us on 1 September 2026. We are telling you that rather than paraphrasing a standard we did not read, because that is precisely the sort of thing this category does casually and it is how bad numbers propagate.

What we could do instead is arithmetic on figures a manufacturer publishes about its own products. Aprilaire is the only maker in our set that states a capacity in gallons per day and a coverage in square feet together, and cites Guideline F as the basis for pairing them. Three of its models do it consistently, and the rate implied by all three agrees to within two percent.

296 square feet per gallon per day is not our opinion. It is one manufacturer's own sizing, reduced to a rate that anybody can recompute from the same three pairs in about fifteen seconds. Full derivation, including what it cannot tell you, is on gallons per day.

Why the field disagrees with itself

Ask three published sources what a 300 square foot room needs and you get three answers spanning a factor of four, one of which is not even in the right unit.

The first two disagree by threefold and neither shows a derivation. The third has quietly changed the subject: a two-gallon tank running for 24 hours is a two-gallon-per-day machine only if it empties in exactly 24 hours, and most of them are advertised on the fact that they do not. This conflation is the single most common error in the category, and it is why so many buyers end up under-sized. Our figure sits between the two published ranges, which is reassuring but is not the point; the point is that ours has arithmetic attached to it.

The correction nobody makes

Every coverage figure in this industry is quoted in square feet. Humidification load is not a function of floor area, it is a function of volume - you are moisturizing a box of air, not a carpet. A 300 square foot room with 10 ft ceilings holds 25% more air than the same room with 8 ft ceilings and needs 25% more water to reach the same relative humidity.

What to do with your number

Once you have a gallons-per-day figure, it does two things. It tells you which of our roundups to read, and it lets you check any manufacturer's claim yourself: divide their square-footage claim by 296 and see whether the output they publish can support it. On most units you will find that no output is published at all, which is itself the answer.

Do not size for maximum humidity

The EPA's guidance on home humidifiers is explicit: do not humidify to indoor relative humidity above 50 percent, because higher levels encourage biological growth. Everything on this site is sized to hold a target inside the 30 to 50 percent band, not to push a room as damp as a machine can make it. The upper limit is not a comfort preference, it is a mold-and-dust-mite threshold, and in cold weather it is also a window-condensation threshold. That is covered on ideal humidity levels.

One consequence worth knowing before you buy: an evaporative unit largely enforces this for you, because a wick can only give up as much water as the surrounding air will accept. An ultrasonic unit will happily keep atomizing water into a room that is already at 60 percent, which is how people end up with condensation on the inside of their windows and a mildew smell in February.

Questions people actually ask

What size humidifier do I need for my house?

Divide the floor area you actually want humidified by 296 to get gallons per day, then multiply by (ceiling height / 8). A 1,200 sq ft floor with 9 ft ceilings needs (1200 x 9 / 8) / 296 = 4.6 gallons per day. Note the phrase 'actually want humidified': a single portable unit does not push moisture around closed doors, so a whole-floor figure only applies if the space is genuinely open.

Why is tank capacity not the same as output?

A tank is a reservoir and output is a rate. A 6-liter unit that runs 60 hours on its lowest setting is moving 0.63 gallons a day; the same unit on maximum might move three times that and empty in a night. Tank size tells you how often you refill. Only output tells you whether the machine can hold humidity in your room.

Does ceiling height change humidifier sizing?

Yes, proportionally. Load follows volume, so a 9 ft ceiling needs 12.5% more water than an 8 ft one and a 10 ft ceiling needs 25% more. Coverage figures on boxes are quoted in square feet and effectively assume a standard ceiling, which is why the correction is worth making yourself.

Is it better to buy a humidifier that is too big?

Slightly oversized is fine and usually better, because a unit running at a lower setting is quieter and refills less often. Grossly oversized is not, because pushing a room past 50 percent relative humidity is what the EPA warns against, and in winter it produces condensation on cold glass. If you buy large, buy something with a humidistat that will actually switch off.

How much water does a humidifier use per day?

As much as it evaporates, which is the same thing as its daily output. For a bedroom-sized unit that is typically half to one and a half gallons a day. For a whole-house unit it can be twelve to eighteen. If you want the figure for a specific machine, divide its tank capacity by its published run time and multiply by 24 - and note which setting that run time describes.
