The oldest design still on sale, and the one with a governor built into the physics. It cannot make white dust and it cannot easily over-humidify a room.

An evaporative humidifier is a fan, a wick and a tray of water. Water is drawn up the wick, the fan pulls room air across it, and evaporation carries water into the air as vapor. There is no mist because nothing is being atomized - the water leaves as individual molecules, the way a wet towel dries.

The two consequences of that mechanism
It cannot produce white dust
Only water molecules leave a wick. Everything dissolved in the water - the calcium and magnesium that make it hard - stays behind in the medium. Honeywell states this plainly about the HCM350: the wicking filter removes impurities from the water, reducing white dust.
That is why an evaporative unit tolerates tap water where an ultrasonic one does not, and it is the strongest single reason to choose this design if you live somewhere with hard water. See white dust.
It self-limits
Evaporation rate depends on how much moisture the surrounding air can still accept. As a room approaches saturation, the rate falls away on its own. An evaporative humidifier therefore has a physical governor: it becomes progressively less effective exactly when it should stop.
Set against the EPA's instruction not to humidify above 50 percent relative humidity, that is a genuine safety margin rather than a marketing line. It matters most in basements, sealed rooms and anywhere with cold glass that will condense before a hygrometer notices.

The wick bill is the whole argument against this design, and the fact that most makers will not quantify it is the reason our cost pages exist. Canopy is the honorable exception at a published 45 days, which works out at four filters across a heating season.
What the good ones do about the wick
A wet wick sitting in a warm room between runs is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and two makers in our set attack that directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping.
- Levoit's Dry Mode on the Superior 6000S: low and high fan speeds dry the elevated wick filters, which Levoit states extends filter life. Two problems, one mechanism.
- Canopy's Smart Persistent Airflow: a fan runs whenever moisture is detected inside the unit, nearly drying it out between uses.
Both are worth paying for. A drying cycle addresses the underlying condition - standing water - rather than treating its symptoms, and it is the closest a portable gets to the ducted unit's advantage of having no reservoir at all.
The output question
Evaporative units include the only portable in our set whose coverage claim survives arithmetic. The Vornado Evap40 publishes up to 4 gallons a day on continuous high against a 1,000 square foot claim; 4 gallons a day covers about 1,180 square feet at our derived rate, so it left itself margin.
That is not universal in the category. The Levoit Superior 6000S claims 3,000 square feet, which would need about 10.1 gallons a day, and its own published tank and run time imply 2.0. The AIRCARE MA1201 claims 3,600 square feet against an implied 2.4. Both figures probably describe the highest fan speed while the run time describes the lowest, and neither maker publishes the output that would connect them. See gallons per day.
Who should buy one
- Anyone with hard water who does not want to buy distilled or dust their furniture.
- Anyone humidifying a large space, where the volume of bought water for an ultrasonic unit becomes absurd - 728 gallons a season at 4 gal/day.
- Anyone humidifying a basement or a sealed room, where the self-limiting property is a real safeguard.
- Anyone who wants no visible mist, on furniture, floors or a piano.
Who should not: anyone who needs silence, since every one of these is a fan and three of the four makers here decline to publish a noise figure. For that, ultrasonic is the answer, with the water caveat attached.

Run the check that fails everywhere else on this page and it passes here. Four gallons a day at 296 square feet per gallon per day is about 1,180 square feet of coverage, against a claim of 1,000. Vornado left itself margin instead of taking it.
It passes because it is evaporative. A wick and a fan can only put as much water into the air as the air will accept, which is why an evaporative unit self-limits near 50% relative humidity and why it cannot produce white dust: the minerals stay in the wick. The EPA's guidance to use low-mineral water exists mainly because ultrasonic and impeller units disperse what is dissolved in the tank, and this design does not.
The cost of that is the wick. Two of them, on a schedule Vornado does not publish, which is the recurring bill an ultrasonic unit does not have. Whether that trade is worth it is arithmetic, and it is worked through in full on our filter-cost page.

Pick 2 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.

Levoit Superior 6000S
Six gallons, evaporative, and a Dry Mode that dries the wicks between runs. The 3,000 sq ft claim needs five times the output its own run time implies.
Six gallons over 72 hours is two gallons a day, which covers about 590 square feet. The box says 3,000. To actually hold humidity across 3,000 square feet this unit would need to move a little over ten gallons a day, and at that rate its six-gallon reservoir would run dry in about fourteen hours. Both numbers describe the machine; only one describes it at a time, and the maker publishes no figure that reconciles them.
Dry Mode is the genuinely good idea here and it deserves credit. A wet wick sitting in a warm room is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and a fan cycle that dries the wicks between runs attacks that problem directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping. It also extends wick life, which is the recurring cost.
Thirty watts to move two gallons a day is efficient, and mist-free operation means the minerals stay in the wicks rather than settling on your furniture. If you can live with a coverage claim you should mentally divide by five, this is a well-made machine.

AIRCARE MA1201 Console
A 3.6-gallon console on casters with four speeds and a full-size SuperWick. The nearest thing to a whole-house humidifier you can plug in.
This one needs care, because the two published figures describe opposite ends of the machine and AIRCARE prints neither of the numbers that would join them up. A 3.6-gallon tank lasting 36 hours is 2.4 gallons a day, or about 710 square feet. Covering the claimed 3,600 square feet would take roughly 12.2 gallons a day, at which rate the same tank empties in about seven hours.
Both can be true at once: 36 hours will be the lowest of the four fan speeds and 3,600 square feet the highest. The problem is that the maker publishes the endurance of one setting and the coverage of another and no output figure at all, so nothing on the page lets a buyer connect them. Retail listings do quote 12 gallons a day; we are not treating a retailer's number as a manufacturer specification.
Taken on its own terms it is a lot of machine. Four speeds, casters, a detachable bottle you fill at a tap rather than carrying the whole unit, and a full-size SuperWick that catches minerals instead of dispersing them. Size it by the setting you will actually run, and expect to refill it daily if that setting is a high one.

Canopy Large Room Humidifier

Canopy has built the machine around the maintenance problem rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague 30-to-60, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize in the first place.
What it does not have is numbers. No tank capacity, no output, no run time, no wattage. The 1,000 square foot claim is therefore the only unverifiable coverage figure on this page: with the others we can at least compute an implied output from the maker's own tank and run time and show you the gap. Here there is nothing to compute with.
That is a real trade and worth stating plainly. You are buying a maintenance design and a subscription-shaped filter cadence, and giving up the ability to check the size claim. For a buyer whose actual failure mode is never cleaning the thing, that may be the right trade. It is not the right trade for someone sizing a room.

Questions people actually ask
How does an evaporative humidifier work?
A fan draws room air across a wet wick. Water evaporates off the wick's large surface area and leaves as vapor - individual water molecules, not droplets - so there is no visible mist. Everything dissolved in the water stays behind in the wick.
Do evaporative humidifiers produce white dust?
No. Only water molecules leave the wick; the minerals stay in it. Honeywell states this directly about the HCM350's wicking filter. It is why evaporative units run happily on tap water and ultrasonic ones do not.
Can an evaporative humidifier over-humidify a room?
Barely. Evaporation slows as the surrounding air approaches saturation, so the machine has a physical governor built in. That is a real advantage against the EPA's instruction not to exceed 50 percent relative humidity, and it matters most in basements and tightly sealed rooms.
Are evaporative humidifiers noisy?
They contain a fan, so they are audible. Levoit publishes 28 to 45 dB for its Superior 6000S. Honeywell, Vornado and AIRCARE publish no noise figures for the evaporative units we looked at, which is its own kind of answer.
How often do you change an evaporative humidifier wick?
Follow your own manual, and note that most makers publish nothing. In our set only Canopy states an interval, at every 45 days, which is four filters across a 182-day heating season. The functional signals are stiffness, a drop in output, or a persistent smell.
