The best humidifiers

Run the check that fails everywhere else on this page and it passes here. Four gallons a day at 296 square feet per gallon per day is about 1,180 square feet of coverage, against a claim of 1,000. Vornado left itself margin instead of taking it.

It passes because it is evaporative. A wick and a fan can only put as much water into the air as the air will accept, which is why an evaporative unit self-limits near 50% relative humidity and why it cannot produce white dust: the minerals stay in the wick. The EPA's guidance to use low-mineral water exists mainly because ultrasonic and impeller units disperse what is dissolved in the tank, and this design does not.

The cost of that is the wick. Two of them, on a schedule Vornado does not publish, which is the recurring bill an ultrasonic unit does not have. Whether that trade is worth it is arithmetic, and it is worked through in full on our filter-cost page.

Skip this ifyou want silence. Every evaporative unit is a fan, and Vornado publishes no noise figure for this one.

One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.

The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.

There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.

Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

This is the only unit in the portable group whose maker publishes an output rate, and publishing it is worth crediting. 550 mL an hour is 13.2 liters a day, which is 3.49 gallons a day, which covers roughly 1,030 square feet at our derived rate. That is more than its own 753 sq ft claim, so for once the box is conservative.

The catch is the setting. 3.49 gallons a day on maximum warm mist empties a 6-liter tank in about eleven hours and draws 280 watts while it does it. On the lowest setting the same machine moves 0.76 gallons a day and covers about 224 square feet. One box, a four-and-a-half-fold range, and only the two ends published.

280 watts is the number to think about if you plan to run warm mist all winter. Boiling water is not free, and this is the page where that becomes a real line on a bill rather than a footnote.

Skip this ifyou want to run it flat out overnight and forget it. At the published maximum it needs refilling before morning.

Six gallons over 72 hours is two gallons a day, which covers about 590 square feet. The box says 3,000. To actually hold humidity across 3,000 square feet this unit would need to move a little over ten gallons a day, and at that rate its six-gallon reservoir would run dry in about fourteen hours. Both numbers describe the machine; only one describes it at a time, and the maker publishes no figure that reconciles them.

Dry Mode is the genuinely good idea here and it deserves credit. A wet wick sitting in a warm room is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and a fan cycle that dries the wicks between runs attacks that problem directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping. It also extends wick life, which is the recurring cost.

Thirty watts to move two gallons a day is efficient, and mist-free operation means the minerals stay in the wicks rather than settling on your furniture. If you can live with a coverage claim you should mentally divide by five, this is a well-made machine.

Skip this ifyou bought it for the 3,000 sq ft number. Size it at around 600 square feet on the setting whose run time Levoit actually publishes.

The interesting number is not 6 liters, it is 60 hours. A 1.58-gallon tank that lasts 60 hours on low is moving 0.63 gallons of water a day, and 0.63 gallons a day is what covers about 187 square feet at the rate we derive from Aprilaire's own published sizing. That is a bedroom. It is not the 505 square feet on the specification table.

Both figures are true and they describe different settings. Levoit publishes the endurance of the quietest setting and the ceiling of the loudest, and never the output that connects them, so a buyer has no way to check the coverage claim. That is not a Levoit problem, it is a category problem, and it is the reason every roundup here shows the implied figure beside the claimed one.

What you are actually buying is the absence of a filter. No wick means no 30-to-60-day replacement cycle and no annual filter bill, and it also means every mineral in your tap water leaves the machine as white dust or stays behind as scale. Run low-mineral water or accept the descaling, which the EPA's own humidifier guidance is blunt about.

Skip this ifyour water is hard and you will not commit to distilled. An ultrasonic unit atomizes whatever is dissolved in the tank, and this one has no wick to catch it.

Canopy has built the machine around the maintenance problem rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague 30-to-60, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize in the first place.

What it does not have is numbers. No tank capacity, no output, no run time, no wattage. The 1,000 square foot claim is therefore the only unverifiable coverage figure on this page: with the others we can at least compute an implied output from the maker's own tank and run time and show you the gap. Here there is nothing to compute with.

That is a real trade and worth stating plainly. You are buying a maintenance design and a subscription-shaped filter cadence, and giving up the ability to check the size claim. For a buyer whose actual failure mode is never cleaning the thing, that may be the right trade. It is not the right trade for someone sizing a room.

Skip this ifyou want to verify the size claim before you buy. Nothing Canopy publishes lets you do that.

This one needs care, because the two published figures describe opposite ends of the machine and AIRCARE prints neither of the numbers that would join them up. A 3.6-gallon tank lasting 36 hours is 2.4 gallons a day, or about 710 square feet. Covering the claimed 3,600 square feet would take roughly 12.2 gallons a day, at which rate the same tank empties in about seven hours.

Both can be true at once: 36 hours will be the lowest of the four fan speeds and 3,600 square feet the highest. The problem is that the maker publishes the endurance of one setting and the coverage of another and no output figure at all, so nothing on the page lets a buyer connect them. Retail listings do quote 12 gallons a day; we are not treating a retailer's number as a manufacturer specification.

Taken on its own terms it is a lot of machine. Four speeds, casters, a detachable bottle you fill at a tap rather than carrying the whole unit, and a full-size SuperWick that catches minerals instead of dispersing them. Size it by the setting you will actually run, and expect to refill it daily if that setting is a high one.

Skip this ifyou want a bedroom unit. This is a living-room-sized appliance and it is not pretending otherwise.

A 10-liter reservoir running 100 hours is 0.62 gallons a day, which is almost exactly the same daily output as the 6-liter Classic 300S. The tower holds more water; it does not move more water. What you are buying is refill interval, and that is a real thing to buy.

For a bedroom, four nights between refills changes the ownership experience more than any spec on the box. It also means four nights of water standing in a tank, which is precisely the condition the EPA warns about. If you take the long refill interval you have to take the cleaning discipline with it.

27.5 watts for a 10-liter unit is efficient, and the sub-28 dB figure is the quietest published number in this set. If a humidifier has ever woken you up, that number is the one to look at.

Skip this ifyou want a machine you can ignore. The long refill interval tempts you to leave water standing, and standing water is exactly what the EPA tells you to empty and dry every day.

This is the only unit in the set where you can compute both ends of the range from published figures, because Levoit gives run times for minimum and maximum. 0.66 gallons over 25 hours is 0.63 a day; the same tank over 11 hours is 1.44 a day. At our derived rate that is roughly 188 to 427 square feet, and the honest way to state its coverage is exactly that: a range, with the setting attached.

Notice what Levoit did not do here: it did not put a square-footage number on the box. Given that every other model in its own line carries one that its published figures cannot support, declining to claim one on the smallest unit reads as restraint rather than an omission.

17 watts is the lowest draw in this set by a factor of one and a half, and the flat base with a wide opening is the single design decision that most reliably predicts whether a humidifier gets cleaned.

Skip this ifthe room is larger than a small bedroom. At maximum mist this empties in eleven hours and still only reaches the low four hundreds of square feet.

Under 26 dB on low cool mist is the kind of figure that decides whether a machine stays in a bedroom, and Levoit publishes both ends of the range rather than just the flattering one. The 41 dB high warm figure is honest and worth knowing before you buy.

0.64 gallons a day implied on low puts this in the same real-world class as the Classic 300S despite a smaller tank: same daily water, fewer hours between refills. If the 300S is too tall for a nightstand, this is the same machine in a shorter body with a heater added.

The 280 W rating is the heater, as it is on the LV600S. On cool mist the draw is a fraction of that. If you never use warm mist you are not paying for it, but you did buy it.

Skip this ifyou want the biggest room this brand covers. The 6-liter LV600S publishes an output figure and a larger claim for similar money.

This is the reference point for the whole site. Aprilaire is the only maker in our set that publishes a capacity in gallons per day and a coverage in square feet together, and cites the residential sizing standard as the basis for pairing them. Three of its models do it consistently: 12 gal/day to 3,600 sq ft, 17 to 5,000, and 18 to 5,300. Those three pairs are where our 296 square feet per gallon per day comes from.

Everything else follows from the fact that it drains. There is no reservoir, so there is no standing water, so the pink film and the mold that dominate portable-humidifier ownership simply do not arise. The Water Panel goes once or twice a heating season instead of a wick every 30 to 60 days, which changes the recurring cost by an order of magnitude.

The honest counterweight is that this is not a purchase, it is a project. It mounts in ductwork, it needs a water line and a drain, it needs a humidistat and an outdoor sensor, and unless you are comfortable cutting into a plenum it needs a contractor. Skip this ifyou rent, or you heat with anything other than a ducted forced-air system. Neither is a fixable objection.
