Editorial policy

Sourcing standards

Every factual claim on this site traces to one of five kinds of source, and the ranking between them is deliberate:

1. Manufacturer documentation - the maker’s own product page or manual. This is the preferred source for any product specification, and every specification on this site links to one.
2. Government and standards bodies - the EPA for humidifier care and indoor humidity, the EIA for electricity prices, AHRI for residential sizing. Used for anything general.
3. Peer-reviewed or public-health literature - used for microbiological claims, such as identifying the organism behind pink film.
4. Our own computation - clearly labeled as ours, with the formula and inputs shown so it can be redone.
5. The live price layer - the only source of any price, refreshed daily and stamped with the date it was checked.

What is not a source

• Other review sites. We cite them when documenting that the field disagrees with itself, which is a claim about what they published, not a claim of fact.
• Retailer listings, for specifications. Where a retailer states a figure the manufacturer does not, we say that is where it came from and do not treat it as a specification.
• Forum posts, videos and social media.
• Memory. A number nobody can point at does not go on the page. This applies with particular force to prices.

Rules we hold ourselves to

• No invented numbers. No estimated volumes, no remembered prices, no approximated specifications. Where a manufacturer does not publish something, the page says “not published”.
• No claim of testing. We have tested nothing and own nothing, and every page that ranks products says so.
• No fabricated credentials. No expert panel, no medical reviewer, no years of experience. See about for who actually writes this.
• No ratings or scores anywhere on the site, and no Review or AggregateRating structured data, because a rating implies an assessment we have not made.
• Publish the disagreement. Where the field genuinely contradicts itself - and on sizing it does, by a factor of three - we show both figures and name both sources rather than quietly picking one.
• Name the limits. Where our method cannot answer something, the page says so and points at someone who can.

Health-adjacent content

Several pages here sit near clinical questions: dry air and nosebleeds, warm mist and congestion, mold and breathing, humidifiers around children. On every one of them the page stops at the same line.

We will describe a mechanism, cite a public-health source, and state a physical hazard - a warm-mist unit contains hot water, and that is a burn risk we can name without holding any credential. We will not tell you what a machine will do for a symptom, a condition, or a particular person. Nobody here holds a medical qualification and no page will imply otherwise. Where a question needs one, the page says so and points at a clinician.

Corrections

When something here is wrong, this is what happens:

1. Tell us. Email info@ventandvane.com or use the contact form. A source URL and the figure you think is wrong is all we need.
2. We check it against the primary source, not against another review site.
3. If it is wrong, we fix the page and note the correction on it, with a date. We do not silently edit numbers.
4. If it is not wrong, we write back and explain how we read the source. Sometimes that conversation shows the page was unclear rather than incorrect, and we fix the wording.

A price that has moved is not a correction - prices change daily and are stamped with the date they were checked. A specification that has changed is, and we want to know.

Update cadence

• Daily - automated price refresh. A stale price falls back to “Check price” rather than showing an old number.
• Monthly - filter and consumable figures re-checked against the live layer.
• Quarterly - every roundup checked for discontinued or out-of-stock picks; specifications re-checked against current manufacturer pages.
• Before October - a full refresh of every roundup and comparison ahead of the heating season, which is when this category’s demand arrives.
• Immediately - corrections, whenever they are found.

The “last updated” date on a page moves only when the content actually changes. An automated price refresh redeploys the site and does not touch it, because a date that moves every day tells a reader nothing.

Commercial and editorial separation

Vent & Vane earns affiliate commission, which is set out in full on affiliate disclosure. No manufacturer sees a page before it publishes, no placement is for sale, and no free products are accepted.

The selection criteria on how we pick make no reference to commission and are applied in a fixed order. Where the honest answer earns us nothing - and on several pages it does - that is what the page says.
