Types of humidifiers
There are four designs in general sale and they differ on exactly two things that matter: whether the minerals in your water end up in the air, and whether you buy a filter.

Most guides to humidifier types are a list of mechanisms. That is not useful, because you do not care how the water gets into the air; you care what the choice costs you and what it does to your room. There are two attributes that genuinely differ between the designs, and every other difference follows from them.

Why the mineral question decides so much
The EPA's home humidifier guidance advises using water with low mineral content, such as distilled, and explains why: ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing the minerals in tap water into the air. That single sentence is the fork in the road.
If you choose ultrasonic and your water is hard, you are choosing between white dust on your furniture and buying distilled water, which over a season is 115 gallons for a bedroom unit and 728 for a large-room one. If you choose evaporative, the minerals stay in a wick, and you are choosing to buy wicks instead. Which bill is smaller is worked out on filter-free vs filtered.
Warm mist is a special case
Boiling water is the only genuinely energy-intensive thing a humidifier does, and it shows in the ratings. The two hybrid units in our set are rated at 280 W with the heater engaged, against 17 to 30 W for everything that does not heat. Over a heating season of overnight use that is about $75 against about $7 at the US average residential rate.

What are the different types of humidifiers?
Four are in general sale: ultrasonic, which vibrates water into a mist; evaporative, which blows air across a wet wick; warm mist, which boils water; and ducted whole-house units, which are plumbed evaporative systems fitted to forced-air heating. They differ meaningfully on only two things: whether they disperse your water's minerals into the air, and whether they need a filter.
Which type of humidifier is best?
It depends on your water. If it is hard, evaporative, because the minerals stay in the wick rather than becoming white dust. If it is soft and you want silence, ultrasonic, because it is quieter and has no filter to buy. If you need more than about four gallons a day, a ducted whole-house unit, because no portable in our set publishes an output that high.
Which humidifier type does not produce white dust?
Evaporative and warm mist. An evaporative wick captures the minerals as the water evaporates off it; a warm-mist unit leaves them behind in the boiling chamber. Ultrasonic and impeller units atomize the water and everything dissolved in it, which is what the EPA warns about.
Is warm mist or cool mist better?
Cool mist for cost, warm mist for comfort in a cold room. The two hybrid units in our set are rated at 280 W with the heater on against 17 to 30 W for cool-mist units, which works out at roughly ten times the seasonal electricity cost.
