Humidifier brands, compared on what they publish

We have never taken one of these apart, so we cannot tell you which brand lasts longest. What we can do is rank them on how much each one is prepared to tell you before you hand over the money.

Every brand comparison you will read claims to know which humidifier lasts longest. Almost none of them has run six machines for five years side by side, and neither have we. So this page ranks brands on something we can actually verify: what each one publishes about its own products.

That sounds like a consolation prize. It is not. In this category the documentation gap is the story - a maker that will not tell you how much water its machine moves in a day has made it impossible for you to check its own room-size claim, and that is a fact about the purchase, not about the paperwork.

The one number that separates them

A humidifier has exactly one job: put a measurable quantity of water into the air per day. Daily output, in gallons, is therefore the only specification that can be checked against a coverage claim. Almost nobody publishes it.

Aprilaire

The best-documented maker in the category, and it is not close. Aprilaire publishes a capacity in gallons per day and a coverage in square feet together, for each model, and cites the residential sizing standard as the basis for pairing them. Three of its models do it consistently: 12 gal/day to 3,600 sq ft, 17 to 5,000, and 18 to 5,300.

Those three pairs are where this site's 296 square feet per gallon-per-day rate comes from - we derived it from Aprilaire's own numbers because Aprilaire was the only maker that published enough to derive anything from. The derivation is shown in full on gallons per day.

The honest downside is the category: these are ducted units that a contractor installs into your furnace plenum, not something you unbox. Aprilaire's own store routes you to a pro rather than a cart for most of the range. If you want a machine you plug in, this brand is not your answer no matter how good its documentation is.

Vornado

The only plug-in brand in our set that publishes a daily output figure. The Evap40 is rated at 4 gallons a day against a coverage claim of 1,000 square feet - and at our derived rate 4 gallons a day actually serves about 1,184, so the claim is conservative. That is rare enough to be worth saying twice.

Against that, Vornado publishes neither a wattage nor a run time for the unit, so you cannot compute its electricity cost or its refill interval before buying. A brand that publishes the hardest number and omits two easy ones is an odd shape, and we have not found an explanation for it.

Levoit

The most thoroughly specified consumer brand here on everything except the number that matters. Levoit publishes tank capacity, run time, wattage, noise in decibels and coverage for essentially every model - and a daily output figure for exactly one, the LV600S at 550 mL/h on maximum warm mist.

Because it publishes both tank and run time, though, you can derive an implied output yourself for every Levoit in the range, which you cannot do for most competitors. That is a real form of transparency even if it is accidental. The catch is that the implied figures come from run times that describe the lowest setting, so they understate what the machine can do - and they still frequently fall short of the coverage on the same page.

Levoit coverage claims against their own implied output

OasisMist 450S215-430 sq ft0.63 gal/day188 sq ft
Superior 6000S3,000 sq ft2.0 gal/day592 sq ft

The 10-liter OasisMist 1000S has four times the reservoir of the 2.5-liter Classic 160 and, on the figures Levoit publishes for each, less than half the daily output. Tank size and output are unrelated, and Levoit's own range is the clearest proof of it.

Honeywell

Publishes the least about output of any brand here and the most about cleaning, which turns out to be the trade a lot of buyers should take. There is no daily output figure and no wattage for the HCM350 - but there are three specific, checkable cleaning claims: dishwasher safe, break resistant, wide opening.

Against the EPA's every-third-day cleaning instruction, a tank that goes in a dishwasher rack is worth more than a specification sheet. Honeywell has optimized for the thing that actually fails in the field. It has also declined to publish a replacement interval for its own HAC504 wick, which means the running cost of its most popular humidifier cannot be computed before purchase - covered at Honeywell filter replacement.

AIRCARE

The console specialist, and the clearest example of the documentation problem on the site. The MA0800 Mini-Console publishes a 2.5-gallon tank, up to 36 hours of run time and coverage up to 2,600 square feet - and no output figure at all.

Both published figures can be true at once and still tell you nothing: 36 hours will be the lowest of three fan speeds and 2,600 square feet the highest, and nothing on the page connects them. The tank and run time imply about 1.67 gallons a day, roughly 493 square feet at our rate; covering 2,600 would take about 8.8.

Canopy

The brand that has designed around maintenance rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the antimicrobial filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague range, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize.

It is also the only brand here that publishes no tank capacity. There is a run time - 18 to 36 hours, tied to room humidity - but a run time without a volume cannot be turned into gallons per day, so the 1,000 square foot claim is the one coverage figure on this site that cannot be checked against anything. You are buying a maintenance design and giving up the ability to verify the size claim.

What we are not telling you

Which brand lasts longest. We have never owned one of these machines for five years, we have not opened one up, and we have no failure-rate data. Any site that ranks humidifier brands on reliability without a test fleet is inventing it, and you should treat the ranking accordingly - including ours, if we ever published one. We will not.

What this page is for is narrower and more useful before a purchase: if you cannot check a maker's coverage claim against its own output figure, you are buying on the label. Two of these six brands let you do the check. That is worth knowing.

The picks, in full

Aprilaire Model 700

Top pick · An actual whole house, sized against a standard

Aprilaire Model 700

Eighteen gallons a day against a stated 5,300 sq ft, cited to AHRI Guideline F. It is ducted, it needs installing, and it is the only sizing claim here with a standard behind it.

This is the reference point for the whole site. Aprilaire is the only maker in our set that publishes a capacity in gallons per day and a coverage in square feet together, and cites the residential sizing standard as the basis for pairing them. Three of its models do it consistently: 12 gal/day to 3,600 sq ft, 17 to 5,000, and 18 to 5,300. Those three pairs are where our 296 square feet per gallon per day comes from.

Everything else follows from the fact that it drains. There is no reservoir, so there is no standing water, so the pink film and the mold that dominate portable-humidifier ownership simply do not arise. The Water Panel goes once or twice a heating season instead of a wick every 30 to 60 days, which changes the recurring cost by an order of magnitude.

The honest counterweight is that this is not a purchase, it is a project. It mounts in ductwork, it needs a water line and a drain, it needs a humidistat and an outdoor sensor, and unless you are comfortable cutting into a plenum it needs a contractor. Our whole-house cost page works through the break-even against running several portables.

What works

  • The only sizing claim in this set with a published standard behind it
  • No reservoir, so no standing water and none of the maintenance that follows from it
  • Water Panel changed once or twice a season instead of a wick every month or two

What does not

  • Requires ducted forced-air heating, a water supply, a drain and, realistically, an installer
  • Installed cost is a different order of magnitude from any portable here
  • Wastes water: the drain design that keeps it clean also sends water to waste

Skip this ifyou rent, or you heat with anything other than a ducted forced-air system. Neither is a fixable objection.

Vornado Evap40

Pick 2 · The only coverage claim here the arithmetic supports

Vornado Evap40

Vornado publishes an output figure and a coverage figure, and the two agree. Four gallons a day covers about 1,180 sq ft at our derived rate against a 1,000 sq ft claim.

Run the check that fails everywhere else on this page and it passes here. Four gallons a day at 296 square feet per gallon per day is about 1,180 square feet of coverage, against a claim of 1,000. Vornado left itself margin instead of taking it.

It passes because it is evaporative. A wick and a fan can only put as much water into the air as the air will accept, which is why an evaporative unit self-limits near 50% relative humidity and why it cannot produce white dust: the minerals stay in the wick. The EPA's guidance to use low-mineral water exists mainly because ultrasonic and impeller units disperse what is dissolved in the tank, and this design does not.

The cost of that is the wick. Two of them, on a schedule Vornado does not publish, which is the recurring bill an ultrasonic unit does not have. Whether that trade is worth it is arithmetic, and it is worked through in full on our filter-cost page.

What works

  • Publishes an output figure, and the coverage claim survives being checked against it
  • Evaporative, so it cannot produce white dust and self-limits near a safe humidity
  • Five-year warranty, the longest published here

What does not

  • Two wicks to replace on an interval Vornado does not publish
  • A fan moving air across a wet wick is audible, and no dB figure is published
  • No rated wattage published

Skip this ifyou want silence. Every evaporative unit is a fan, and Vornado publishes no noise figure for this one.

Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture

Pick 3 · Cleaning, without qualification

Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture

A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.

One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.

The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.

There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.

What works

  • Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
  • The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
  • The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed

What does not

  • HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
  • One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
  • The maker's own page states two different tank capacities

Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

Levoit Classic 300S

Pick 4 · A bedroom you refill twice a week

Levoit Classic 300S

A 6-liter tank, a genuinely wide top-fill opening and no filter to buy. Its own numbers describe a 190 sq ft machine, not the 505 sq ft on the box.

The interesting number is not 6 liters, it is 60 hours. A 1.58-gallon tank that lasts 60 hours on low is moving 0.63 gallons of water a day, and 0.63 gallons a day is what covers about 187 square feet at the rate we derive from Aprilaire's own published sizing. That is a bedroom. It is not the 505 square feet on the specification table.

Both figures are true and they describe different settings. Levoit publishes the endurance of the quietest setting and the ceiling of the loudest, and never the output that connects them, so a buyer has no way to check the coverage claim. That is not a Levoit problem, it is a category problem, and it is the reason every roundup here shows the implied figure beside the claimed one.

What you are actually buying is the absence of a filter. No wick means no 30-to-60-day replacement cycle and no annual filter bill, and it also means every mineral in your tap water leaves the machine as white dust or stays behind as scale. Run low-mineral water or accept the descaling, which the EPA's own humidifier guidance is blunt about.

What works

  • No wick or replacement filter, so the running cost after purchase is water and 26 watts
  • 26 W is genuinely low: at the June 2026 US average tariff a full heating season of overnight running is a few dollars
  • The top-fill opening is wide enough to get a hand and a brush inside, which is most of what makes a humidifier easy to keep clean

What does not

  • The 505 sq ft coverage claim cannot be reconciled with the published tank and run time
  • Ultrasonic, so hard water becomes airborne white dust unless you use low-mineral water
  • Levoit publishes no gallons-per-day figure at any setting

Skip this ifyour water is hard and you will not commit to distilled. An ultrasonic unit atomizes whatever is dissolved in the tank, and this one has no wick to catch it.

AIRCARE MA0800 Mini-Console

Pick 5 · A plug-in console with its own humidistat

AIRCARE MA0800 Mini-Console

A 2.5-gallon evaporative console with three fan speeds, an adjustable humidistat and a MAF2 SuperWick. Its 2,600 sq ft claim is far beyond what its own tank and run time imply, so size it as a large room rather than a floor.

Two published figures that describe opposite ends of the machine, and none of the numbers that would join them up. A 2.5-gallon tank lasting 36 hours is about 1.67 gallons a day, or roughly 493 square feet at our derived rate. Covering the claimed 2,600 square feet would take about 8.8 gallons a day, at which rate the same tank empties in under seven hours.

Both can be true at once: 36 hours is AIRCARE's maximum run time, which will be the lowest of the three fan speeds, and 2,600 square feet will be the highest. It can certainly move more than 1.67 gallons a day on a higher speed. AIRCARE does not say how much more, so its own published data supports sizing it as a large room, not a whole floor.

What it has that most units in our set do not is an adjustable humidistat with digital controls, stated on AIRCARE's own page. On an evaporative machine, which already slows down as the air approaches saturation, that is a second brake against overshooting - and the MAF2 SuperWick keeps your tap water's minerals out of the air.

What works

  • Adjustable humidistat and digital controls, per AIRCARE's own specification
  • Evaporative SuperWick captures minerals, so no white dust
  • Three fan speeds to trade output against noise

What does not

  • No published output figure anywhere on the manufacturer page
  • The 2,600 sq ft claim and the 36-hour run time cannot both describe the same setting
  • No published noise figure, wattage or wick replacement interval

Skip this ifyou want to humidify a whole floor on the strength of the box. Its own tank and run time support a large room, not 2,600 square feet.

Canopy Large Room Humidifier

Pick 6 · Dishwasher-safe everything

Canopy Large Room Humidifier

Evaporative, no visible mist, dishwasher-safe tank, tray, cap and grill, and a fan that dries the unit between uses. Canopy publishes almost no numbers at all - no tank capacity, no output, no wattage.

Canopy has built the machine around the maintenance problem rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague 30-to-60, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize in the first place.

What it does not have is a tank capacity. Canopy publishes a run time - 18 to 36 hours, depending on room humidity - but no tank volume, no output and no wattage, and a run time on its own cannot be turned into gallons per day. The 1,000 square foot claim is therefore the only unverifiable coverage figure on this page: with every other unit we can compute an implied output from the maker's own tank and run time and show you the gap. Here half the arithmetic is missing.

That is a real trade and worth stating plainly. You are buying a maintenance design and a subscription-shaped filter cadence, and giving up the ability to check the size claim. For a buyer whose actual failure mode is never cleaning the thing, that may be the right trade. It is not the right trade for someone sizing a room.

What works

  • Four dishwasher-safe components, which no other unit here matches
  • A published filter interval, which most of this set does not give you
  • Airflow drying between uses attacks standing water directly

What does not

  • No published tank capacity, output or wattage, so the size claim cannot be checked
  • 45-day filter replacement is the most frequent schedule in this set
  • The 1,000 sq ft claim cannot be checked against any manufacturer figure

Skip this ifyou want to verify the size claim before you buy. Nothing Canopy publishes lets you do that.

The arithmetic

There is none to do. This maker publishes no tank capacity, no output and no run time, so there is no figure of its own to check its coverage claim against. That is the finding.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best humidifier brand?

On documentation - which is what can actually be verified before purchase - Aprilaire for ducted units and Vornado for plug-in ones, because they are the only two that publish a daily output figure you can check a coverage claim against. On cleaning design, Honeywell and Canopy. We do not rank brands on reliability because we have no test fleet and will not invent one.

Is Levoit a good humidifier brand?

It publishes more than almost anyone on tank, run time, wattage and noise, which lets you derive an implied output for any model in the range - a check you cannot run on most competitors. The weakness is that its coverage claims frequently exceed what its own published tank and run time imply, sometimes by a factor of two or three.

Which humidifier brands publish daily output?

Two in our set. Aprilaire publishes gallons per day for every ducted model, alongside a coverage figure and the standard it is based on. Vornado publishes 4 gallons a day for the Evap40. Levoit publishes an output figure for one model only, the LV600S. Honeywell, AIRCARE and Canopy publish none.

Are expensive humidifier brands worth it?
