How we pick
The most important page on this site. It sets out exactly what we do, what we do not do, and - unusually - the four things our method cannot tell you.

What we do
Four things, all of which you could redo yourself with a browser and a calculator. That is the point of them.
- Compile published specifications from each manufacturer’s own product page or manual, recording the source and the date it was read. Every figure on this site has one attached. Where a maker does not publish something, the field says so rather than borrowing a number from a retailer or another review site.
- Compute daily output from each unit’s own published tank capacity and run time, and compare it against the floor area the maker claims to cover. This is the arithmetic the category refuses to print, and it is the reason our rankings differ from everyone else’s.
- Total the running costs - filters at the interval the maker publishes, electricity at a cited national tariff - across a heating season and across five years.
- Check retailer listings for current price and availability, through an automated daily refresh rather than by hand.
What we do not do
Said plainly, because in this category the omissions are where the lying happens.
- We do not test. There is no chamber, no scale, no protocol and no lab. We have never handled any of the 11 units on this site.
- We do not own any of them. Not one.
- We accept no free products. None have been offered and none would be taken.
- We sell no placements. Position in a roundup is not for sale and never will be.
- We hold no credentials. No HVAC certification, no engineering qualification, no medical qualification. Where a question needs one - and several on this site do - we say so and stop.
- We do not publish ratings. There are no scores anywhere on this site and no
RevieworAggregateRatingstructured data, because a rating implies an assessment we have not made.
Why arithmetic is worth more than a borrowed credential here
The top of this field has things we do not have. One publisher runs a climate-controlled chamber and weighs tanks before and after. Another fields certified sleep coaches and a physician reviewer. A third states it has tested 121 models and puts the results behind a paywall. We cannot imitate any of that honestly, and we are not going to try.
What we found instead is that the field’s own sizing advice contradicts itself by a factor of three for the same room, that it routinely presents tank capacity where daily output belongs, and that not one publisher we fetched calculates what a humidifier costs to own. Those are gaps that arithmetic closes and a laboratory does not. So that is where we compete.
Where our numbers come from
The sizing rate
Everything on this site traces back to one constant: 296 square feet of floor area per gallon per day, at an 8 ft ceiling, in a tightly constructed home.
It is derived from Aprilaire’s own published capacity-and-coverage pairs, which the company states follow AHRI Guideline F. Three of its models: Model 500 at 12 gal/day to 3,600 sq ft; Model 400 at 17 gal/day to 5,000 sq ft; Model 700 at 18 gal/day to 5,300 sq ft. Those give 300.0, 294.1 and 294.4 square feet per gallon per day. The mean is 296.2 and we round to 296. The full working is on gallons per day.
We would rather have cited AHRI Guideline F itself. We could not: ahrinet.org returned HTTP 403 to this build on 1 September 2026, and paraphrasing a standard we have not read is exactly how bad numbers get laundered through this category.
The electricity rate
18.34 cents per kilowatthour: the US average residential price for June 2026, from the EIA’s Electric Power Monthly. Every running-cost figure states the rate and the hours it used, so you can substitute your own - regional rates in the US differ by more than a factor of four.
The heating season
182 days, October through March. It is an assumption, it is the same assumption on every page so the figures compose, and it is stated wherever it is used.
Prices
Prices come only from an automated daily refresh against the retailer, and they carry the date they were checked. At the time of writing that layer is empty - the retailer API credentials were not present in the environment that built this site - so every price on Vent & Vane reads “Check price”. We would rather show that than a number we cannot currently verify. No price is ever typed into body copy from memory.
How a pick gets chosen
There is no numeric rubric and we are not going to invent one, because a weighted score computed from unverifiable inputs is decoration. The criteria are applied in this order:
- Does its published output meet the requirement of the page? A unit that cannot move the water the page’s room size needs does not go on that page, whatever its coverage claim says.
- Does the maker publish enough to check it? A unit whose maker publishes a real output figure is a safer purchase than one that publishes a tank size and a square-footage claim, and we say so explicitly.
- What does it cost to own? Filter interval, wattage, and whether hard water forces you onto bought distilled water.
- Will you keep it clean? Wide opening, dishwasher-safe parts, a drying mode. The EPA recommends cleaning every third day, and machine design decides whether that happens.
- Who is it wrong for? Every pick on this site carries a “skip this if”. A roundup where every product wins is not a roundup.
How a pick gets removed
- It is discontinued, or has been out of stock long enough to stop being a real option.
- A specification we relied on turns out to be wrong, or the manufacturer changes it.
- A better-documented unit displaces it - publishing a checkable figure counts.
- A reader shows us the arithmetic was wrong. That happens, and we publish the correction.
The limits of this method
This is the part most publishers leave out, and naming it is the strongest evidence that the rest of the page is real. Four things our approach genuinely cannot tell you:
- Build quality. Whether the plastic feels cheap, whether the lid seals, whether the tank cracks. You learn that by handling one.
- Long-term reliability. Whether it still works in year three. We have no fleet, no returns data and no ownership history.
- Real-world noise. We can compare published dB figures, and we cannot tell you whether a particular unit develops a rattle or whether its pitch is the sort that keeps you awake.
- Whether the maker’s figures are honest. We check them for internal consistency, which is real work and catches a lot. We cannot verify them against measurement.
For those four, the publishers with test labs are genuinely better than us and you should read them. We would rather say that than pretend the gap does not exist.
Corrections
If a number here is wrong, tell us and we will fix the page and say that we did. Every correction is dated on the page it affects. Our editorial policy sets out how that works, and contact is the fastest route - a source URL and the figure you think is wrong is all we need.
Who writes this
Scooter M., an enthusiast who's genuinely into this. I read the manuals, compile the published specs, and do the math. No lab coat.
