White dust: your water, made airborne
It is not a fault and it is not the machine breaking down. It is the mineral content of your tap water, atomized and settling on your furniture, and only some humidifier types do it at all.

A fine white powder appears on the furniture near a humidifier, or on the top of a television, and it comes back a day after you wipe it off. It is not a manufacturing fault, it is not the machine disintegrating, and there is nothing to return. It is the dissolved mineral content of your tap water, aerosolized.
The mechanism
Tap water carries dissolved calcium, magnesium and other salts - what makes water hard. An ultrasonic humidifier works by vibrating a metal disc at very high frequency, shattering water into a fine cloud of droplets. Those droplets carry everything that was dissolved in the water. The water evaporates into the air, and the mineral it was carrying does not: it stays airborne as a very fine particle, then settles.
The EPA states this directly in its humidifier guidance: ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers are very efficient at dispersing minerals in tap water into the air, and it advises using water with low mineral content such as distilled. The white dust is the visible part of what it is describing.

The three fixes, ranked
1. Change the water - eliminates it completely
Distilled water has effectively no dissolved mineral, so there is nothing to atomize. This is the fix the EPA names and it is the only one that ends the problem outright rather than reducing it. The cost is real - a gallon or so a day for a bedroom unit, bought and carried - and it is weighed up properly on which water to use.
2. Change the machine type - eliminates it completely
Any evaporative unit ends the problem permanently and lets you keep using the tap. The trade is a wick to replace on a schedule and an audible fan. 3. Demineralization cartridges - reduces it
Many ultrasonic units accept a small ion-exchange cartridge that sits in the tank and takes some hardness out of the water. They help, they are consumables with their own running cost, and they do not match distilled water. Treat them as a mitigation rather than a fix, and note that the cartridge is another item in the filter cost column that nobody mentions when they sell you a filter-free machine.
Things that do not work
- Bottled drinking water. Spring and mineral water contain dissolved mineral by definition, which is what the name says. Some is harder than tap.
- Boiled water. Boiling precipitates some hardness out but leaves plenty dissolved, and once cooled it is not sterile either.
- Filter jugs. Domestic carbon jugs are built for taste and chlorine, not for total dissolved solids. They make very little difference to white dust.
- Running it on a lower setting. Less mist means less dust per hour and the same dust per gallon. You have slowed it, not stopped it.
Is the dust harmful?
We are not going to answer that with a number we cannot cite. What the EPA does say is that the deposits indicate minerals are being dispersed into the air, that scale acts as a breeding ground for microorganisms, and that breathing mist from a humidifier containing microbial growth has been implicated in a type of lung inflammation. The mineral and the microbial issues are separate, and the second is the one with a documented health finding attached.
What is not in doubt is the nuisance. Fine mineral dust settles on everything - electronics, dark furniture, the top of a piano - and it is abrasive enough that you should lift it off with a damp cloth rather than dry-wiping it across a screen.
White dust versus scale
Same minerals, two destinations. What leaves the machine and lands on your furniture is white dust. What stays behind and hardens inside the tank and base is scale, and it needs descaling with an acid. A household with visible white dust will always also have scale, and the presence of scale matters more than the dust does, because the EPA identifies it as a breeding ground for microorganisms.

Will a filter stop white dust?
An evaporative wick does, because it is the mechanism itself - Honeywell states that the HCM350's wicking filter removes impurities from the water, reducing white dust. A demineralization cartridge in an ultrasonic tank reduces it. Neither a carbon water-filter jug nor a room air purifier will make a meaningful difference.
