Best budget humidifiers
A cheap humidifier is not a small expensive one. Makers get to a low price by cutting specific things, and knowing which things decides whether you saved money or wasted it.

The good news about this category is that humidification is a mature, simple technology and the cheap machines genuinely work. The bad news is that the savings come from somewhere specific, and some of those places matter much more than others.

Where the money actually goes
Four things separate a $30 humidifier from a $250 one. Only two of them are worth paying for on most purchases.
| What gets cut | Does it matter? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily output | Yes - most | This is the actual job. A small unit cannot hold humidity in a large room no matter how long it runs. |
| Cleanability | Yes | The every-third-day clean is the thing people stop doing. A design that fights you loses. |
| Smart controls and app | Rarely | Convenience. A $12 hygrometer tells you the same thing an app does. |
| Tank size | No | Buys refill interval, not output. Frequently marketed as if it were capacity. |
How we ranked these
- Output per dollar, not tank per dollar. Computed from the maker's own published tank and run time where an output figure is not published.
- Can you clean it without a special tool? A wide opening you can reach a hand through beats any feature at this price.
- Does the maker publish enough to check its claims? At a low price this is where corners get cut first, and a unit that publishes its own numbers earns trust.
- Is the running cost genuinely low? A cheap machine with a wick you replace six times a season is not cheap. Worked through on filter-free versus filtered.
Why the Classic 160 leads
It is the cheapest unit we cover by a wide margin and it gives up remarkably little. 2.5 liters, 17 watts, under 28 dB at maximum mist, and a base Levoit explicitly describes as having no hard-to-reach corners.
It is also the only unit in our entire set where you can compute both ends of the output range from published figures, because Levoit gives run times for minimum and maximum: 0.66 gallons over 25 hours is 0.63 a day, and the same tank over 11 hours is 1.44 a day. At our derived rate that is roughly 188 to 427 square feet. Most makers give you one end and let you assume the other.
The honest cost of the low price is that Levoit publishes no coverage claim for it at all - which, unusually, we regard as a point in its favor rather than against. An absent claim is more honest than an unsupportable one, and three other units on this very page carry coverage figures their own arithmetic does not support.
The one that is not the cheapest and should be
The Honeywell HCM350 costs more than the Classic 160 and is the better buy for a lot of people, for one reason: the tank goes in the dishwasher.
Across a heating season the EPA's guidance implies roughly 60 cleans. The difference between a 20-minute scrub and a dishwasher rack, 60 times, is the difference between a humidifier that stays clean and one that quietly becomes the problem it was bought to solve. It is also evaporative, so it produces no white dust on hard water - which the ultrasonic units on this page will.
What it costs you is a HAC504 wick on an interval Honeywell declines to publish, so the running cost cannot be computed before you buy. That is a real mark against it and we cost out the scenarios at Honeywell filter replacement.
What we would not buy at this price
- Anything sold on tank size. The correlation between reservoir volume and daily output in this category is close to zero, and at the budget end it is where the marketing concentrates.
- An ultrasonic unit if your water is hard. You will trade the purchase saving for distilled water or for dusting. Hard water covers the maths.
- A unit with no published run time. Without a tank figure and a run time you cannot derive an output, which means you are buying a room-size claim with nothing behind it.
Is spending more actually worth it?
Sometimes, and the threshold is a room size rather than a feature list. Work out your requirement in gallons per day from the sizing chart first. If it comes to under a gallon a day - which covers most bedrooms - the units on this page do the job and the extra money buys convenience. If it comes to two or three gallons a day, no budget unit here will hold that room and buying one is the expensive mistake.
The full five-year picture, including electricity and consumables rather than just the sticker, is on the five-year total. It changes the ranking more than you would expect: a cheap machine with a frequent wick is not the cheapest thing to own.
The picks, in full

Top pick · A desk, a nursery corner, a small bedroom
Levoit Classic 160
2.5 liters, 17 watts, and a base with no hard-to-reach corners. The smallest honest recommendation here, and the only one whose maker declines to claim a coverage figure at all.
This is the only unit in the set where you can compute both ends of the range from published figures, because Levoit gives run times for minimum and maximum. 0.66 gallons over 25 hours is 0.63 a day; the same tank over 11 hours is 1.44 a day. At our derived rate that is roughly 188 to 427 square feet, and the honest way to state its coverage is exactly that: a range, with the setting attached.
Notice what Levoit did not do here: it did not put a square-footage number on the box. Given that every other model in its own line carries one that its published figures cannot support, declining to claim one on the smallest unit reads as restraint rather than an omission.
17 watts is the lowest draw in this set by a factor of one and a half, and the flat base with a wide opening is the single design decision that most reliably predicts whether a humidifier gets cleaned.
What works
- Run time published at both minimum and maximum, so the output range can be computed
- 17 W is the lowest rated draw here
- Levoit publishes its own descaling procedure, including the soak time
What does not
- 2.5 L means daily refills at anything above the lowest setting
- No published coverage figure, so you have to do the arithmetic yourself
- Ultrasonic, so the white-dust caveat applies
Skip this ifthe room is larger than a small bedroom. At maximum mist this empties in eleven hours and still only reaches the low four hundreds of square feet.
The arithmetic
- Implied output (minimum mist)
- 0.63 gal/day
- Covers, at 296 sq ft per gal/day
- 188 sq ft
Output derived as tank capacity divided by published run time, times 24. Coverage rate derived from Aprilaire’s own published capacity-and-coverage pairs.

Pick 2 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.
What works
- Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
- The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
- The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed
What does not
- HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
- One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
- The maker's own page states two different tank capacities
Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.
The arithmetic
- Implied output (continuous)
- 1.0 gal/day

Pick 3 · A bedroom you refill twice a week
Levoit Classic 300S
A 6-liter tank, a genuinely wide top-fill opening and no filter to buy. Its own numbers describe a 190 sq ft machine, not the 505 sq ft on the box.
The interesting number is not 6 liters, it is 60 hours. A 1.58-gallon tank that lasts 60 hours on low is moving 0.63 gallons of water a day, and 0.63 gallons a day is what covers about 187 square feet at the rate we derive from Aprilaire's own published sizing. That is a bedroom. It is not the 505 square feet on the specification table.
Both figures are true and they describe different settings. Levoit publishes the endurance of the quietest setting and the ceiling of the loudest, and never the output that connects them, so a buyer has no way to check the coverage claim. That is not a Levoit problem, it is a category problem, and it is the reason every roundup here shows the implied figure beside the claimed one.
What you are actually buying is the absence of a filter. No wick means no 30-to-60-day replacement cycle and no annual filter bill, and it also means every mineral in your tap water leaves the machine as white dust or stays behind as scale. Run low-mineral water or accept the descaling, which the EPA's own humidifier guidance is blunt about.
What works
- No wick or replacement filter, so the running cost after purchase is water and 26 watts
- 26 W is genuinely low: at the June 2026 US average tariff a full heating season of overnight running is a few dollars
- The top-fill opening is wide enough to get a hand and a brush inside, which is most of what makes a humidifier easy to keep clean
What does not
- The 505 sq ft coverage claim cannot be reconciled with the published tank and run time
- Ultrasonic, so hard water becomes airborne white dust unless you use low-mineral water
- Levoit publishes no gallons-per-day figure at any setting
Skip this ifyour water is hard and you will not commit to distilled. An ultrasonic unit atomizes whatever is dissolved in the tank, and this one has no wick to catch it.
The arithmetic

Pick 4 · A quiet bedside unit with a heater
Levoit OasisMist 450S
Warm and cool mist in a 4.5-liter body with a published sub-26 dB cool setting. Small, quiet, and no filter subscription.
Under 26 dB on low cool mist is the kind of figure that decides whether a machine stays in a bedroom, and Levoit publishes both ends of the range rather than just the flattering one. The 41 dB high warm figure is honest and worth knowing before you buy.
0.64 gallons a day implied on low puts this in the same real-world class as the Classic 300S despite a smaller tank: same daily water, fewer hours between refills. If the 300S is too tall for a nightstand, this is the same machine in a shorter body with a heater added.
The 280 W rating is the heater, as it is on the LV600S. On cool mist the draw is a fraction of that. If you never use warm mist you are not paying for it, but you did buy it.
What works
- Publishes noise at both extremes rather than only the quiet one
- Warm and cool in a body small enough for a nightstand
- No wick filter to buy on a schedule
What does not
- 4.5 L means more refills than the 6 L and 10 L units for the same daily output
- 280 W rated with the heater on
- The 430 sq ft claim is about 2.3x what its published tank and run time imply
Skip this ifyou want the biggest room this brand covers. The 6-liter LV600S publishes an output figure and a larger claim for similar money.
The arithmetic
- Implied output (low mist)
- 0.63 gal/day

Questions people actually ask
What is the best cheap humidifier?
The Levoit Classic 160 is the best value we cover: 2.5 liters, 17 watts, under 28 dB at maximum mist, and a base with no hard-to-reach corners. It is the only unit in our set that publishes run times at both minimum and maximum mist, so you can compute both ends of its output range rather than one.
Are cheap humidifiers any good?
For a bedroom, yes - humidification is a simple, mature technology and the inexpensive machines genuinely work. The failure mode is buying a cheap unit for a room that needs two or three gallons a day, which no budget humidifier will hold. Size the room first on the sizing chart.
How much should I spend on a humidifier?
Work out the gallons per day your room needs, then buy the cheapest unit that genuinely meets it. Under a gallon a day - most bedrooms - is well served under $100. Above about two gallons a day you are into evaporative and console units and the budget tier stops being an option.
Is a more expensive humidifier better?
It is usually bigger, not better. Price in this category tracks capacity and build rather than documentation quality or cleanability - and the best-documented plug-in humidifier we cover is not the most expensive one. The one thing worth paying up for is a design you will actually keep clean.
What is the cheapest humidifier to run?
An ultrasonic cool-mist unit on tap water: about 17 to 30 watts and no consumables, which is roughly $7 in electricity across a season of overnight use at the national average rate. The catch is white dust on hard water. A warm-mist unit at 280 W is closer to $75 for the same season.
