Levoit Classic 300S review
As a bedroom machine it is close to ideal: 26 watts, under 30 decibels, no filter to buy and a brush in the box. As a 505 square foot machine, which is what the listing suggests, it is not.

This is the humidifier most people in this category actually end up buying: mid-priced, filter-free, quiet, app-connected, and sold with a square-footage range on the box. It deserves a careful review because it is genuinely good at one job and routinely bought for a different one.

What Levoit publishes
| Specification | Published |
|---|---|
| Tank | 1.58 gal / 6 L |
| Coverage claimed | 215-505 sq ft |
| Run time | Up to 60 h on low |
| Rated power | 26 W |
| Noise | 30 dB or less |
| Filter | None required |
| Cleaning | Top-fill opening, brush included |
No daily output figure, which is the norm rather than the exception here. But Levoit publishes a tank and a run time, and those two imply one.
So the top of the coverage claim, 505 square feet, is about 2.7 times what its own published figures support. That is not unusual in this category - six of the units we cover carry claims more than double their implied output - but it is the single most important thing to know before buying this machine.
What it is genuinely good at
Sized as a bedroom machine, which is what 187 square feet means, it is close to the best version of that product available.
- It is quiet. 30 dB or less, published, with no fan in the machine at all. An evaporative unit cannot get there because it has one by definition.
- It has no consumable. No wick, no filter, nothing to buy again. Over five years that is a real number against a filtered machine - filter-free versus filtered works it through.
- It is 26 watts. About $6.94 for a season of overnight running at the US average rate, against roughly $75 for a hybrid running its heater.
- It was designed to be cleaned. A top-fill opening wide enough to reach through, and a brush supplied - which is a small signal that somebody expected the base to be scrubbed. The EPA asks for that every third day.
- It stops. The auto mode holds a target rather than running until the tank is empty, which in a closed bedroom is the difference between comfortable and condensation.
The honest downsides
- The coverage claim. 505 square feet is not a figure its own tank and run time support. Buy it for a bedroom and it is excellent; buy it for an open-plan living area and it will disappoint you, and the disappointment will look like a faulty machine.
- White dust on hard water. It is ultrasonic, so dissolved minerals leave the tank with the mist and settle on nearby surfaces. Distilled water solves it at a cost; an evaporative machine solves it by mechanism.
- A 6-liter tank is heavy when full. Not an issue beside a bed; a real one if you are carrying it to a bathroom down a corridor, which is why our dorm picks rank the smaller sibling above it.
- Two-year warranty, Levoit's standard, and not valid through unauthorized sellers.
300S, 160 or Honeywell?
These three cover most of what a single-room buyer is choosing between, and the decision is unusually clean.

The Classic 160 is the one to buy if the room is small or the tank has to be carried - it is the only unit in our set publishing run times at both ends, so you can compute its output range rather than assume it. The Honeywell HCM350 is the one to buy on hard water or if cleaning is the thing you will neglect: a dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, at about 1.0 gallon a day. It has a fan, publishes no decibel figure, and its HAC504 wick has no published replacement interval.
Who should buy it
Someone humidifying one closed room of roughly bedroom size, on soft water, who wants silence, no consumables and a machine that stops at a target. For that person it is an easy recommendation and there is not much to argue with.
Someone trying to change how a whole floor feels should not buy it, and no amount of app control changes that. The requirement for a 700 square foot open area is about 2.36 gallons a day - nearly four times what this machine's published figures imply. How many humidifiers covers what to do instead.
What the app actually does
This is sold as a smart humidifier, and it is worth separating the two halves of that. The useful half is the humidistat: the machine reads the room, holds a set point and stops. That is a real behavioral difference from a unit that runs until the tank is empty, and in a closed bedroom it is the difference between a comfortable morning and condensation on the window.
The other half - scheduling, remote control, a status screen - is convenience rather than capability. It does not move more water, and a $12 hygrometer tells you the same thing the app's reading does. We work through the distinction on smart humidifiers.
One caveat applies to every smart humidifier we cover, including this one: the sensor sits inside the machine, which is the wettest object in the room, so it tends to read higher than the room does and stop early. Put a separate hygrometer on the far side of the room and calibrate your set point against that rather than against the display.
What a season costs
Cleaning it
The opening is wide enough to get a hand and the supplied brush into the base, which is the property that actually predicts whether a humidifier stays clean. Against the EPA's schedule - empty and dry the tank daily, clean every water-contact surface every third day - that is roughly 60 cleans across a heating season, and the difference between a design you can reach into and one you cannot is the difference between doing them and not.
The picks, in full

Top pick · A bedroom you refill twice a week
Levoit Classic 300S
A 6-liter tank, a genuinely wide top-fill opening and no filter to buy. Its own numbers describe a 190 sq ft machine, not the 505 sq ft on the box.
The interesting number is not 6 liters, it is 60 hours. A 1.58-gallon tank that lasts 60 hours on low is moving 0.63 gallons of water a day, and 0.63 gallons a day is what covers about 187 square feet at the rate we derive from Aprilaire's own published sizing. That is a bedroom. It is not the 505 square feet on the specification table.
Both figures are true and they describe different settings. Levoit publishes the endurance of the quietest setting and the ceiling of the loudest, and never the output that connects them, so a buyer has no way to check the coverage claim. That is not a Levoit problem, it is a category problem, and it is the reason every roundup here shows the implied figure beside the claimed one.
What you are actually buying is the absence of a filter. No wick means no 30-to-60-day replacement cycle and no annual filter bill, and it also means every mineral in your tap water leaves the machine as white dust or stays behind as scale. Run low-mineral water or accept the descaling, which the EPA's own humidifier guidance is blunt about.
What works
- No wick or replacement filter, so the running cost after purchase is water and 26 watts
- 26 W is genuinely low: at the June 2026 US average tariff a full heating season of overnight running is a few dollars
- The top-fill opening is wide enough to get a hand and a brush inside, which is most of what makes a humidifier easy to keep clean
What does not
- The 505 sq ft coverage claim cannot be reconciled with the published tank and run time
- Ultrasonic, so hard water becomes airborne white dust unless you use low-mineral water
- Levoit publishes no gallons-per-day figure at any setting
Skip this ifyour water is hard and you will not commit to distilled. An ultrasonic unit atomizes whatever is dissolved in the tank, and this one has no wick to catch it.

Pick 2 · A desk, a nursery corner, a small bedroom
Levoit Classic 160
2.5 liters, 17 watts, and a base with no hard-to-reach corners. The smallest honest recommendation here, and the only one whose maker declines to claim a coverage figure at all.
This is the only unit in the set where you can compute both ends of the range from published figures, because Levoit gives run times for minimum and maximum. 0.66 gallons over 25 hours is 0.63 a day; the same tank over 11 hours is 1.44 a day. At our derived rate that is roughly 188 to 427 square feet, and the honest way to state its coverage is exactly that: a range, with the setting attached.
Notice what Levoit did not do here: it did not put a square-footage number on the box. Given that every other model in its own line carries one that its published figures cannot support, declining to claim one on the smallest unit reads as restraint rather than an omission.
17 watts is the lowest draw in this set by a factor of one and a half, and the flat base with a wide opening is the single design decision that most reliably predicts whether a humidifier gets cleaned.
What works
- Run time published at both minimum and maximum, so the output range can be computed
- 17 W is the lowest rated draw here
- Levoit publishes its own descaling procedure, including the soak time
What does not
- 2.5 L means daily refills at anything above the lowest setting
- No published coverage figure, so you have to do the arithmetic yourself
- Ultrasonic, so the white-dust caveat applies
Skip this ifthe room is larger than a small bedroom. At maximum mist this empties in eleven hours and still only reaches the low four hundreds of square feet.

Pick 3 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.
What works
- Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
- The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
- The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed
What does not
- HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
- One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
- The maker's own page states two different tank capacities
Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

Questions people actually ask
Is the Levoit Classic 300S worth it?
For a bedroom, yes: 26 watts, 30 dB or less, no filter to buy, a brush in the box and an auto mode that stops at a target. For the 505 square feet at the top of its coverage claim, no - its own tank and run time imply about 0.63 gallons a day, which serves roughly 187 square feet.
What size room is the Levoit Classic 300S for?
Treat it as a bedroom machine of about 187 square feet, which is what its published 1.58 gallon tank and 60-hour run time imply at our derived rate. Levoit claims 215 to 505 square feet; the top of that range is about 2.7 times what the published figures support.
Does the Classic 300S need filters?
No. It is a filter-free ultrasonic unit, which is part of its appeal - there is no wick to buy or track. The trade is that the minerals in your tap water leave with the mist instead of staying in a filter, so on hard water it produces white dust.
Classic 300S or Classic 160?
The 160 if the room is small, the tank has to be carried, or you want the lowest draw in our set at 17 watts. The 300S if you want a longer refill interval and an auto mode. Their implied outputs on low are the same 0.63 gallons a day - the 300S buys endurance, not capacity.
How loud is the Levoit Classic 300S?
Levoit publishes 30 dB or less. It is ultrasonic, so there is no fan - which is why it and its siblings are the quietest machines we cover, and why every evaporative unit is louder by design.
