Best humidifiers when you have no ductwork
This site tells you eight times that hot-water baseboard, radiators and mini-splits disqualify you from a ducted humidifier. It has never told you what to buy instead. That is what this page is for.

If you heat with hot-water baseboard, radiators, mini-splits or electric panel heaters, a whole-house humidifier is not a purchase decision you get to make. There is no air stream to put moisture into, so the entire ducted category - bypass, fan-powered and steam alike - is unavailable.
That much this site already says, repeatedly. What it has not done until now is answer the obvious next question, which is what the best available alternative actually looks like and how far it gets you.

Why steam does not rescue you
This is worth clearing up first, because it is the most common false hope in this situation. A whole-house steam humidifier boils water electrically and injects the vapor into the duct - the boiling is independent of your heating, but the distribution is not. No ducts, no distribution.
What a steam unit does buy, in a house that does have ducts, is independence from supply-air temperature - which is why it is the usual answer for a ducted heat pump. We cover that trade on steam vs evaporative. It is simply not a route out of having no ductwork at all.
What "portable whole house humidifier" actually means
It is a marketing phrase, and it is worth being blunt about it on a page aimed at people searching for one. No portable humidifier sold is a whole-house machine in the sense a ducted unit is. The comparison is not close.
| Unit | Output | Basis | Covers, at our rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aprilaire 700 (ducted) | 18 gal/day | published | 5,328 sq ft |
| Vornado Evap40 | 4.0 gal/day | published, continuous high | 1,184 sq ft |
| Levoit Superior 6000S | 2.0 gal/day | implied on low fan | 592 sq ft |
| AIRCARE MA0800 | 1.67 gal/day | implied at max run time | 493 sq ft |
| Honeywell HCM350 | 1.0 gal/day | implied, continuous | 296 sq ft |
The largest published portable output in our set is a quarter of what one ducted machine delivers. So the honest framing for this page is not "which portable replaces a whole-house humidifier" - none does - but "how much of the house can I actually hold, and with how many machines".
Start with your number
Put that against the table above and the shape of the answer appears immediately. One Vornado covers an open area of about 1,200 square feet. Two cover most of a small house. Nothing covers 2,000 square feet of separate rooms, because output does not travel through closed doors - the reasoning is on how many humidifiers.
How we ranked these
- Output per machine, published where a maker gives a figure. When you cannot have one big machine, the next best thing is the fewest machines, and that means buying the most output each one can deliver rather than the most tank.
- Can it hold a target and stop? You are running these for months in a house where nothing else is controlling humidity. A humidistat matters more here than in a bedroom.
- Is it self-limiting? Evaporative units slow as the air approaches saturation, which is a second brake in a house with no central control at all. Every pick here is evaporative for that reason.
- Can it survive a four-month duty cycle? The EPA asks for a daily empty and dry and a clean of every water-contact surface every third day - per machine, and you will own more than one.
Why the Vornado leads
Because it moves the most water of any portable we cover and it is the only one whose coverage claim survives being checked. Vornado publishes up to 4 gallons of output in 24 hours on continuous high against a claim of up to 1,000 square feet; at our derived rate that output actually serves about 1,184.
It also has automatic humidity control with a built-in humidistat and three speeds, which is the combination this situation needs - a machine that holds a set point without anyone watching it. Vornado backs it with a 5-Year Satisfaction Guarantee, the longest published cover in our set.
The console option, and the rest
The AIRCARE MA0800 is the closest thing to a console-style whole-house machine you can plug in, and AIRCARE publishes an adjustable humidistat with digital controls - useful for the same reason as the Vornado's. Its own tank and run time imply about 1.67 gallons a day, roughly 493 square feet. Treat the 2,600 square foot figure on the box with suspicion: that would need about 8.8 gallons a day, more than five times what its published figures support.
The Levoit Superior 6000S has the largest plug-in reservoir here at 6 gallons and runs up to 72 hours on its low fan, which matters when you are refilling several machines rather than one. Its Dry Mode runs the fan to dry the wick filters between cycles - the only automation in our set aimed at the failure mode rather than at convenience. It implies about 2.0 gallons a day against a 3,000 square foot claim, so size it at 592.
The Canopy Large Room is the pick if the honest constraint is that you will be maintaining two or three machines and will not keep up. Four components go in the dishwasher and the filter has a firm 45-day interval. The cost is that Canopy publishes no tank capacity and no output at all, so it is the one machine here whose contribution to your total cannot be calculated - which on this page, where the whole exercise is adding machines up, is a real objection. Our review covers it in full.
The Honeywell HCM350 is the per-room machine for the bedrooms once the living space is handled. About 1.0 gallon a day, a dishwasher-safe and break-resistant tank with a wide opening, and the easiest cleaning of anything we cover. Its HAC504 wick has no published replacement interval, which is the mark against it.
The maintenance multiplier nobody prices in
This is the real cost of having no ductwork, and it is not the purchase price. A ducted unit has no reservoir at all - it is plumbed in and drains to waste. Every machine on this page has a tank, and the EPA's schedule applies to each one separately.
| Machines | Daily empties | Cleans | Output at best |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (ducted, for comparison) | 0 | Annual water panel | 18 gal/day |
| 1 portable | 182 | about 60 | 4.0 gal/day |
| 2 portables | 364 | about 120 | 8.0 gal/day |
| 3 portables | 546 | about 180 | 12.0 gal/day |
Three Vornados would match an Aprilaire 500 on paper and cost you 546 tank empties a season to do it. That is the trade this page exists to make visible, and it is why the realistic recommendation below is not to try to match a ducted unit at all.
The honest recommendation
Do not try to humidify the whole house. Humidify the rooms where dry air actually costs you something, and let the rest be dry.
- One large machine in the main living space, sized against that room's number rather than the house's. For most open living areas that is the Vornado.
- One smaller machine in the bedroom you sleep in, with the door shut. The Honeywell is the easiest of these to keep clean, which matters when it is the second tank you are carrying.
- Nothing in hallways, bathrooms or unused rooms. They have the most air exchange and nobody is asking them to be comfortable.
- A hygrometer in each humidified room, placed away from the machine, because with no central control you are the control system.
That is two machines, 364 empties and about 120 cleans across a season, and it holds the two spaces you actually occupy. It is a worse deal than a ducted unit and a much better one than three machines failing to hold a whole floor.
If you rent
Then the portable route is not a compromise, it is the only route, and the calculus changes in one useful way: nothing here is a permanent modification, so the machines move with you. The window caution applies more than usual, though - older rentals often have the coldest glazing, and condensation on a window you do not own is a deposit problem. If water forms on the glass, the room is above what that window tolerates regardless of what the hygrometer says.
The picks, in full

Top pick · The only coverage claim here the arithmetic supports
Vornado Evap40
Vornado publishes an output figure and a coverage figure, and the two agree. Four gallons a day covers about 1,180 sq ft at our derived rate against a 1,000 sq ft claim.
Run the check that fails everywhere else on this page and it passes here. Four gallons a day at 296 square feet per gallon per day is about 1,180 square feet of coverage, against a claim of 1,000. Vornado left itself margin instead of taking it.
It passes because it is evaporative. A wick and a fan can only put as much water into the air as the air will accept, which is why an evaporative unit self-limits near 50% relative humidity and why it cannot produce white dust: the minerals stay in the wick. The EPA's guidance to use low-mineral water exists mainly because ultrasonic and impeller units disperse what is dissolved in the tank, and this design does not.
The cost of that is the wick. Two of them, on a schedule Vornado does not publish, which is the recurring bill an ultrasonic unit does not have. Whether that trade is worth it is arithmetic, and it is worked through in full on our filter-cost page.
What works
- Publishes an output figure, and the coverage claim survives being checked against it
- Evaporative, so it cannot produce white dust and self-limits near a safe humidity
- Five-year warranty, the longest published here
What does not
- Two wicks to replace on an interval Vornado does not publish
- A fan moving air across a wet wick is audible, and no dB figure is published
- No rated wattage published
Skip this ifyou want silence. Every evaporative unit is a fan, and Vornado publishes no noise figure for this one.

Pick 2 · A plug-in console with its own humidistat
AIRCARE MA0800 Mini-Console
A 2.5-gallon evaporative console with three fan speeds, an adjustable humidistat and a MAF2 SuperWick. Its 2,600 sq ft claim is far beyond what its own tank and run time imply, so size it as a large room rather than a floor.
Two published figures that describe opposite ends of the machine, and none of the numbers that would join them up. A 2.5-gallon tank lasting 36 hours is about 1.67 gallons a day, or roughly 493 square feet at our derived rate. Covering the claimed 2,600 square feet would take about 8.8 gallons a day, at which rate the same tank empties in under seven hours.
Both can be true at once: 36 hours is AIRCARE's maximum run time, which will be the lowest of the three fan speeds, and 2,600 square feet will be the highest. It can certainly move more than 1.67 gallons a day on a higher speed. AIRCARE does not say how much more, so its own published data supports sizing it as a large room, not a whole floor.
What it has that most units in our set do not is an adjustable humidistat with digital controls, stated on AIRCARE's own page. On an evaporative machine, which already slows down as the air approaches saturation, that is a second brake against overshooting - and the MAF2 SuperWick keeps your tap water's minerals out of the air.
What works
- Adjustable humidistat and digital controls, per AIRCARE's own specification
- Evaporative SuperWick captures minerals, so no white dust
- Three fan speeds to trade output against noise
What does not
- No published output figure anywhere on the manufacturer page
- The 2,600 sq ft claim and the 36-hour run time cannot both describe the same setting
- No published noise figure, wattage or wick replacement interval
Skip this ifyou want to humidify a whole floor on the strength of the box. Its own tank and run time support a large room, not 2,600 square feet.

Pick 3 · Mist-free humidification with a drying cycle
Levoit Superior 6000S
Six gallons, evaporative, and a Dry Mode that dries the wicks between runs. The 3,000 sq ft claim needs five times the output its own run time implies.
Six gallons over 72 hours is two gallons a day, which covers about 590 square feet. The box says 3,000. To actually hold humidity across 3,000 square feet this unit would need to move a little over ten gallons a day, and at that rate its six-gallon reservoir would run dry in about fourteen hours. Both numbers describe the machine; only one describes it at a time, and the maker publishes no figure that reconciles them.
Dry Mode is the genuinely good idea here and it deserves credit. A wet wick sitting in a warm room is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and a fan cycle that dries the wicks between runs attacks that problem directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping. It also extends wick life, which is the recurring cost.
Thirty watts to move two gallons a day is efficient, and mist-free operation means the minerals stay in the wicks rather than settling on your furniture. If you can live with a coverage claim you should mentally divide by five, this is a well-made machine.
What works
- Dry Mode addresses the real failure mode of evaporative units instead of masking it
- Mist-free, so no white dust whatever your water is like
- 30 W for six gallons of capacity, with noise published at both ends of the range
What does not
- The 3,000 sq ft claim is about five times what the published tank and run time imply
- Four wicks to replace, on an interval Levoit does not publish
- 45 dB at the top of the fan range is audible in a quiet bedroom
Skip this ifyou bought it for the 3,000 sq ft number. Size it at around 600 square feet on the setting whose run time Levoit actually publishes.
The arithmetic
- Implied output (low fan speed)
- 2.0 gal/day

Pick 4 · Dishwasher-safe everything
Canopy Large Room Humidifier
Evaporative, no visible mist, dishwasher-safe tank, tray, cap and grill, and a fan that dries the unit between uses. Canopy publishes almost no numbers at all - no tank capacity, no output, no wattage.
Canopy has built the machine around the maintenance problem rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague 30-to-60, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize in the first place.
What it does not have is a tank capacity. Canopy publishes a run time - 18 to 36 hours, depending on room humidity - but no tank volume, no output and no wattage, and a run time on its own cannot be turned into gallons per day. The 1,000 square foot claim is therefore the only unverifiable coverage figure on this page: with every other unit we can compute an implied output from the maker's own tank and run time and show you the gap. Here half the arithmetic is missing.
That is a real trade and worth stating plainly. You are buying a maintenance design and a subscription-shaped filter cadence, and giving up the ability to check the size claim. For a buyer whose actual failure mode is never cleaning the thing, that may be the right trade. It is not the right trade for someone sizing a room.
What works
- Four dishwasher-safe components, which no other unit here matches
- A published filter interval, which most of this set does not give you
- Airflow drying between uses attacks standing water directly
What does not
- No published tank capacity, output or wattage, so the size claim cannot be checked
- 45-day filter replacement is the most frequent schedule in this set
- The 1,000 sq ft claim cannot be checked against any manufacturer figure
Skip this ifyou want to verify the size claim before you buy. Nothing Canopy publishes lets you do that.
The arithmetic
There is none to do. This maker publishes no tank capacity, no output and no run time, so there is no figure of its own to check its coverage claim against. That is the finding.

Pick 5 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.
What works
- Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
- The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
- The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed
What does not
- HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
- One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
- The maker's own page states two different tank capacities
Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

Questions people actually ask
Can you get a whole house humidifier without ductwork?
No. Every whole-house humidifier - bypass, fan-powered and steam - distributes moisture through ducts, and a steam unit injects its vapor into the duct just as an evaporative one does. Without forced-air ductwork there is nothing to distribute through, so the realistic options are one or more large portables placed in the rooms you use.
What is the best humidifier for baseboard heat?
The largest portable you can place in the main living space, plus a smaller one in the bedroom. The Vornado Evap40 publishes 4 gallons a day - the most of any portable we cover - with a built-in humidistat, which matters when there is no central system controlling humidity. Hot-water baseboard rules out every ducted option entirely.
Is there such a thing as a portable whole house humidifier?
Not in the sense the phrase implies. The largest published portable output in our set is 4 gallons a day against 18 for a ducted Aprilaire 700 - roughly a quarter. Console-style units like the AIRCARE MA0800 are the closest in form, but its own tank and run time imply about 1.67 gallons a day, not the 2,600 square feet on the box.
What humidifier works with radiator heat?
Any portable, because radiators do not affect the humidifier at all - they simply give you no ductwork to install a whole-house unit into. Size the machine to the room it stands in rather than to the house, and expect to need more than one if you want more than one room held at target.
Do I need a humidifier with a heat pump?
That depends on whether your heat pump is ducted. A central ducted heat pump can take a whole-house humidifier, though its lower supply-air temperature is the usual reason steam is recommended over evaporative for those systems. A ductless mini-split cannot, and puts you on this page.
How many portable humidifiers do I need without ductwork?
Work out the gallons per day for each space you will close off and buy the fewest machines that meet those numbers - about 2.03 for a 600 square foot living area and roughly half a gallon for a bedroom. Remember each machine carries its own EPA cleaning schedule: two portables is 364 daily empties and about 120 cleans across a heating season.
