Vornado Evap40 review
One machine in our set publishes a daily output figure, pairs it with a humidistat, and claims less coverage than that output supports. It is also the one with the longest guarantee and the thinnest spec sheet.

Almost every humidifier in this category claims a room size its own published figures cannot support. We check every one against its own arithmetic, and the Evap40 is the only portable that comes out the other side with room to spare.

The claim, and the check
Vornado publishes up to 4 gallons of water output in 24 hours when operated continuously on high, for spaces up to 1,000 square feet.
That is the opposite of the pattern everywhere else on this site, where claims routinely exceed implied output by two to five times. It is the single strongest reason to buy this machine, and it is a reason you can verify before paying.

The humidistat, which matters more than it reads
Vornado states automatic humidity control with a built-in humidistat. On a machine of this output that is not a convenience feature, it is a safety rail: 4 gallons a day into a room that only needs two will push past the EPA's 30 to 50 percent band and put water on the coldest window in the house.
It is also evaporative, which means it is partly self-limiting anyway - evaporation slows as the air approaches saturation - and that the minerals in your tap water stay in the wicks rather than landing on the furniture as white dust. For a machine sized at a whole floor, that second point is worth as much as the first.
The five-year cover
Vornado publishes a 5-Year Satisfaction Guarantee. That is the longest cover any maker in our set publishes - more than double Levoit's two-year limited warranty, and two years beyond Honeywell's three on its warm-mist model.
A warranty is not a lifespan and we will not pretend otherwise; nobody in this category publishes failure rates, including us. But it is the only durability statement a manufacturer puts in writing, and a company willing to stand behind a machine for five years is telling you something a product photograph cannot. How long humidifiers last sets out what else can honestly be said.
The two figures Vornado will not publish
For a machine this well documented on the number that matters most, the omissions are strange.
- No wattage. So the seasonal electricity cost of a machine you will run continuously from November to March cannot be computed before purchase. For comparison, we can compute it for every Levoit in our set.
- No run time. So the refill interval cannot be worked out either. A 4-gallon tank at 4 gallons a day is roughly daily on continuous high, but Vornado does not say that and the figure changes with the speed.
- No decibel figure. It is an evaporative unit, so it has a fan, and fan noise rises with output. In a bedroom that absence matters; in a living room much less.
- No wick replacement interval. Two wicks are included and Vornado does not say how often they are replaced, which means the running cost has a hole in it. That is common - four of the filtered units we cover publish no interval.
Who should buy it
- Anyone humidifying an open living area of up to roughly 1,000 square feet who wants a claim that survives checking. This is the machine's core case and it is a strong one.
- Hard-water households. Evaporative means the minerals end up in a wick rather than on the furniture.
- Anyone who wants the machine to stop on its own, which the built-in humidistat and the self-limiting mechanism both contribute to.
- Anyone buying for static or whole-floor dryness, where bedroom-scale machines fail - our static electricity picks lead with it for that reason.
Who should not
- Bedroom buyers who need a published noise figure. It has a fan and Vornado publishes nothing about it. The ultrasonic units publish decibels with the setting attached; this does not.
- Anyone who needs to budget the running cost exactly. Without a wattage or a wick interval, two of the four cost components cannot be computed.
- Anyone needing more than about 4 gallons a day. That is the top of the portable market, and above it the honest answer is a ducted unit - see 2,000 sq ft.
The verdict
It is the most trustworthy coverage claim in the portable market and the longest guarantee we have found, in a machine that is deliberately plain about everything else. If you want a humidifier that will hold a floor and you would rather have one checkable number than a page of unverifiable ones, this is the one to buy. If you want to know what it costs to run before you buy it, Vornado has not told you - and that is a fair thing to hold against it.
The wicks, which are the running cost
Two wicks are included and they are the only consumable. Vornado does not publish a replacement interval for them, which means the running cost of this machine cannot be computed in advance - the same gap four of the filtered units we cover leave.
What to do about it in practice: replace on the functional signals rather than a schedule. A wick that has gone stiff, crusted or discolored has stopped being a wick, and the symptom is a drop in output at the same fan speed with no other explanation. That is the same guidance we give for the Honeywell, and for the same reason - filter replacement covers the arithmetic when a maker does publish an interval and what to do when it does not.
The related point is that an evaporative machine's wick is the mechanism, not an accessory. A neglected one does not make the humidifier noisy or leaky; it makes it quietly ineffective, which is far harder to notice and is the most common reason an evaporative unit gets replaced when it did not need to be.
Against the ducted alternative
At 4 gallons a day this is the top of the portable market, and it is worth knowing where that sits against the other end. The Aprilaire 700 publishes 18 gallons a day and has no reservoir at all. If your requirement is above about 4 gallons a day - roughly a 1,200 square foot open floor - then no number of Evap40s is the elegant answer, and whole house versus room is the decision to read instead.
The picks, in full

Top pick · The only coverage claim here the arithmetic supports
Vornado Evap40
Vornado publishes an output figure and a coverage figure, and the two agree. Four gallons a day covers about 1,180 sq ft at our derived rate against a 1,000 sq ft claim.
Run the check that fails everywhere else on this page and it passes here. Four gallons a day at 296 square feet per gallon per day is about 1,180 square feet of coverage, against a claim of 1,000. Vornado left itself margin instead of taking it.
It passes because it is evaporative. A wick and a fan can only put as much water into the air as the air will accept, which is why an evaporative unit self-limits near 50% relative humidity and why it cannot produce white dust: the minerals stay in the wick. The EPA's guidance to use low-mineral water exists mainly because ultrasonic and impeller units disperse what is dissolved in the tank, and this design does not.
The cost of that is the wick. Two of them, on a schedule Vornado does not publish, which is the recurring bill an ultrasonic unit does not have. Whether that trade is worth it is arithmetic, and it is worked through in full on our filter-cost page.
What works
- Publishes an output figure, and the coverage claim survives being checked against it
- Evaporative, so it cannot produce white dust and self-limits near a safe humidity
- Five-year warranty, the longest published here
What does not
- Two wicks to replace on an interval Vornado does not publish
- A fan moving air across a wet wick is audible, and no dB figure is published
- No rated wattage published
Skip this ifyou want silence. Every evaporative unit is a fan, and Vornado publishes no noise figure for this one.

Pick 2 · Mist-free humidification with a drying cycle
Levoit Superior 6000S
Six gallons, evaporative, and a Dry Mode that dries the wicks between runs. The 3,000 sq ft claim needs five times the output its own run time implies.
Six gallons over 72 hours is two gallons a day, which covers about 590 square feet. The box says 3,000. To actually hold humidity across 3,000 square feet this unit would need to move a little over ten gallons a day, and at that rate its six-gallon reservoir would run dry in about fourteen hours. Both numbers describe the machine; only one describes it at a time, and the maker publishes no figure that reconciles them.
Dry Mode is the genuinely good idea here and it deserves credit. A wet wick sitting in a warm room is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and a fan cycle that dries the wicks between runs attacks that problem directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping. It also extends wick life, which is the recurring cost.
Thirty watts to move two gallons a day is efficient, and mist-free operation means the minerals stay in the wicks rather than settling on your furniture. If you can live with a coverage claim you should mentally divide by five, this is a well-made machine.
What works
- Dry Mode addresses the real failure mode of evaporative units instead of masking it
- Mist-free, so no white dust whatever your water is like
- 30 W for six gallons of capacity, with noise published at both ends of the range
What does not
- The 3,000 sq ft claim is about five times what the published tank and run time imply
- Four wicks to replace, on an interval Levoit does not publish
- 45 dB at the top of the fan range is audible in a quiet bedroom
Skip this ifyou bought it for the 3,000 sq ft number. Size it at around 600 square feet on the setting whose run time Levoit actually publishes.

Pick 3 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.
What works
- Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
- The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
- The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed
What does not
- HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
- One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
- The maker's own page states two different tank capacities
Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

Questions people actually ask
Is the Vornado Evap40 worth it?
It is the only portable humidifier we cover whose coverage claim survives its own arithmetic - 4 gallons a day published serves about 1,184 square feet against a 1,000 square foot claim - and it carries a 5-Year Satisfaction Guarantee, the longest cover in our set. The reservations are the figures Vornado omits: no wattage, no run time, no decibel rating and no wick interval.
What size room is the Vornado Evap40 for?
Vornado claims up to 1,000 square feet, and at our derived rate its published 4 gallons a day actually serves about 1,184. It is an open-living-area machine rather than a bedroom one, and it is the largest published portable output in our set.
Does the Vornado Evap40 make white dust?
No. It is evaporative, so the minerals dissolved in your tap water stay in the wicks instead of being atomized into the room. That is also why the wicks need replacing - though Vornado publishes no interval for them.
How loud is the Vornado Evap40?
Vornado does not publish a decibel figure. It is evaporative, so it has a fan, and fan noise rises with the speed setting. If a published noise figure matters to you - in a bedroom, say - the ultrasonic units in our set publish theirs with the setting attached.
Vornado Evap40 or Levoit Superior 6000S?
The Vornado if you want a checkable claim and the longer guarantee: 4 gallons a day published against the Levoit's 2.0 implied. The Levoit if you want the larger 6-gallon reservoir, a published 30 W draw and its Dry Mode, which runs the fan to dry the wicks between cycles. Note the Levoit claims 3,000 square feet against an implied 592.
