Best humidifiers for an apartment
Apartments change the problem in three specific ways: shared walls, windows you do not own, and a lease that makes moisture damage your liability. All three point at the same short list.

Most humidifier advice assumes a house: a room you can close, a window you own, and nobody on the other side of the wall. An apartment breaks all three assumptions, and the machine that suits one does not automatically suit the other.
The constraints are specific enough to shorten the list considerably, so it is worth being clear about what they are before looking at any product.

The three things an apartment changes
- Condensation is your liability, not your landlord's. Older apartment windows are often single-glazed or aluminum-framed, which makes them the coldest surface in the room by a wide margin. Push the humidity up and that is where the water goes - on a frame you will be asked to explain at the end of the lease.
- Shared walls make noise a neighbor problem. A fan you would not notice in a detached bedroom is a fan that carries. This pushes hard toward ultrasonic.
- There is nowhere to put a console. The units that move serious water are floor-standing appliances the size of a small filing cabinet. In an apartment that is a piece of furniture you did not want.
How we ranked these
- Does it stop? An auto mode with a humidistat matters far more in an apartment than in a house, because the failure mode is water on somebody else's window frame rather than a slightly muggy room.
- How quiet is it at the setting you would actually run? Published decibel figures with the setting attached count. Figures without one do not.
- Does it fit a small space and a small footprint? Including whether it can sit on a surface rather than the floor.
- Can you clean it in an apartment kitchen? A tank that fits a small sink, or better, a dishwasher.
Sizing an apartment properly
Apartments are usually one thermal space with doorways rather than doors, so the honest area to size against is often the whole dwelling rather than the room the machine stands in.
That arithmetic gives most apartment dwellers an uncomfortable answer: a single plug-in humidifier will not hold an entire 800 square foot apartment at target. This is the most common disappointment in the category and it is a sizing problem, not a product problem.
The practical answer is usually to stop trying. Humidify the room you sleep in, close the door, and accept that the hallway is drier. One unit sized to a bedroom will hold a bedroom comfortably; the same unit asked to hold a whole apartment will run constantly and hold nothing.
Why the Classic 300S leads
It is the best fit for what an apartment actually needs: 26 watts, 30 dB or less, a 6-liter tank that runs up to 60 hours, and an auto mode that will stop when the room reaches target instead of continuing into your windows.
Its own published tank and run time imply about 0.63 gallons a day, which at our derived rate serves roughly 187 square feet - a bedroom, comfortably, which is the job we are recommending it for. Levoit's box says 215 to 505 square feet; that top figure is not one its own run time supports, and buying it for a 500 square foot open-plan living area would disappoint you.
The honest downside is white dust. It is ultrasonic, so on hard water the minerals land on surfaces - which in a rented flat with dark floors is more noticeable than most people expect. If your water is hard, move down this list.
The quiet question, which is really a neighbor question
Ultrasonic units are near-silent because there is no fan - just a vibrating plate. The Classic 300S is rated at 30 dB or less and the Classic 160 at under 28 dB at maximum mist. Evaporative units have a fan by definition and the Superior 6000S publishes a range of 28 to 45 dB, which is honest of Levoit and also tells you what the top of its range sounds like.
For a studio, where the machine is in the room you sleep in, this is close to decisive. Quiet humidifiers goes into the decibel claims in more detail, including which ones come with a setting attached and which do not.
If your building has hard water
Then the ranking inverts and the Honeywell or the Canopy becomes the right buy. Both are evaporative: the minerals stay in a wick rather than being atomized onto the furniture, and neither produces a visible plume.
The Honeywell adds the best cleaning story in our set - dishwasher safe, break resistant, wide opening, all stated by Honeywell - which in an apartment with one small sink is worth more than it sounds. The Canopy puts four separate components in the dishwasher and publishes a firm 45-day filter interval, though it publishes no tank capacity at all, which is covered in our review of it.
What not to buy for an apartment
- A console unit. The AIRCARE MA0800 is a console-style machine sold for up to 2,600 square feet. In a house basement that is fine. In an apartment it is furniture.
- Anything ducted. A whole-house humidifier is plumbed into a furnace you do not own and cannot modify.
- A large-tank unit bought for its tank. A 10-liter reservoir is four nights between refills and, in our set, less than half the implied output of a 2.5-liter machine.
One more that is worth stating: do not buy a machine with no auto shut-off for a room you sleep in and leave. The risk in an apartment is not the machine, it is the window - and a unit that cannot stop is a unit that will find the coldest surface in the building and put water on it.
The picks, in full

Top pick · A bedroom you refill twice a week
Levoit Classic 300S
A 6-liter tank, a genuinely wide top-fill opening and no filter to buy. Its own numbers describe a 190 sq ft machine, not the 505 sq ft on the box.
The interesting number is not 6 liters, it is 60 hours. A 1.58-gallon tank that lasts 60 hours on low is moving 0.63 gallons of water a day, and 0.63 gallons a day is what covers about 187 square feet at the rate we derive from Aprilaire's own published sizing. That is a bedroom. It is not the 505 square feet on the specification table.
Both figures are true and they describe different settings. Levoit publishes the endurance of the quietest setting and the ceiling of the loudest, and never the output that connects them, so a buyer has no way to check the coverage claim. That is not a Levoit problem, it is a category problem, and it is the reason every roundup here shows the implied figure beside the claimed one.
What you are actually buying is the absence of a filter. No wick means no 30-to-60-day replacement cycle and no annual filter bill, and it also means every mineral in your tap water leaves the machine as white dust or stays behind as scale. Run low-mineral water or accept the descaling, which the EPA's own humidifier guidance is blunt about.
What works
- No wick or replacement filter, so the running cost after purchase is water and 26 watts
- 26 W is genuinely low: at the June 2026 US average tariff a full heating season of overnight running is a few dollars
- The top-fill opening is wide enough to get a hand and a brush inside, which is most of what makes a humidifier easy to keep clean
What does not
- The 505 sq ft coverage claim cannot be reconciled with the published tank and run time
- Ultrasonic, so hard water becomes airborne white dust unless you use low-mineral water
- Levoit publishes no gallons-per-day figure at any setting
Skip this ifyour water is hard and you will not commit to distilled. An ultrasonic unit atomizes whatever is dissolved in the tank, and this one has no wick to catch it.

Pick 2 · Cleaning, without qualification
Honeywell HCM350 Germ Free Cool Moisture
A break-resistant, dishwasher-safe tank and a wide opening. It is the only unit here designed so the hardest part of ownership is easy.
One gallon over 24 hours is one gallon a day, which at our derived rate is about 296 square feet. Honeywell says medium room. Those two statements agree, which is a low bar that most of this category fails to clear.
The reason to buy it is the tank. Dishwasher-safe and break-resistant, with an opening wide enough to actually reach inside, against an EPA instruction to clean every third day. A humidifier you will genuinely clean twice a week beats a larger one you will clean twice a winter, and this is the only unit here whose maker treats that as a design requirement rather than a footnote.
There is one inconsistency worth naming. The specification table on Honeywell's own page says a 1 gallon tank; the feature copy a few hundred pixels above it says 1.1 gallons. It is a small discrepancy and it is on the maker's own page, which is a fair illustration of why we quote the table and say which one we took.
What works
- Dishwasher-safe, break-resistant tank with a wide opening, which is the whole ballgame for maintenance
- The wicking filter captures minerals, so no white dust regardless of your water
- The published tank and run time are consistent with the room size claimed
What does not
- HAC504 wicks are a recurring cost with no interval published on the product page
- One gallon a day is a bedroom, not a floor of a house
- The maker's own page states two different tank capacities
Skip this ifyou need to humidify an open-plan living space. This is a one-room machine and its own figures say so.

Pick 3 · A desk, a nursery corner, a small bedroom
Levoit Classic 160
2.5 liters, 17 watts, and a base with no hard-to-reach corners. The smallest honest recommendation here, and the only one whose maker declines to claim a coverage figure at all.
This is the only unit in the set where you can compute both ends of the range from published figures, because Levoit gives run times for minimum and maximum. 0.66 gallons over 25 hours is 0.63 a day; the same tank over 11 hours is 1.44 a day. At our derived rate that is roughly 188 to 427 square feet, and the honest way to state its coverage is exactly that: a range, with the setting attached.
Notice what Levoit did not do here: it did not put a square-footage number on the box. Given that every other model in its own line carries one that its published figures cannot support, declining to claim one on the smallest unit reads as restraint rather than an omission.
17 watts is the lowest draw in this set by a factor of one and a half, and the flat base with a wide opening is the single design decision that most reliably predicts whether a humidifier gets cleaned.
What works
- Run time published at both minimum and maximum, so the output range can be computed
- 17 W is the lowest rated draw here
- Levoit publishes its own descaling procedure, including the soak time
What does not
- 2.5 L means daily refills at anything above the lowest setting
- No published coverage figure, so you have to do the arithmetic yourself
- Ultrasonic, so the white-dust caveat applies
Skip this ifthe room is larger than a small bedroom. At maximum mist this empties in eleven hours and still only reaches the low four hundreds of square feet.

- 0.63 gal/day

Pick 4 · Dishwasher-safe everything
Canopy Large Room Humidifier
Evaporative, no visible mist, dishwasher-safe tank, tray, cap and grill, and a fan that dries the unit between uses. Canopy publishes almost no numbers at all - no tank capacity, no output, no wattage.
Canopy has built the machine around the maintenance problem rather than around a spec sheet, and it shows in both directions. Four components go in the dishwasher, the filter has a stated 45-day life rather than a vague 30-to-60, and a fan dries the interior between runs so there is less standing water to colonize in the first place.
What it does not have is a tank capacity. Canopy publishes a run time - 18 to 36 hours, depending on room humidity - but no tank volume, no output and no wattage, and a run time on its own cannot be turned into gallons per day. The 1,000 square foot claim is therefore the only unverifiable coverage figure on this page: with every other unit we can compute an implied output from the maker's own tank and run time and show you the gap. Here half the arithmetic is missing.
That is a real trade and worth stating plainly. You are buying a maintenance design and a subscription-shaped filter cadence, and giving up the ability to check the size claim. For a buyer whose actual failure mode is never cleaning the thing, that may be the right trade. It is not the right trade for someone sizing a room.
What works
- Four dishwasher-safe components, which no other unit here matches
- A published filter interval, which most of this set does not give you
- Airflow drying between uses attacks standing water directly
What does not
- No published tank capacity, output or wattage, so the size claim cannot be checked
- 45-day filter replacement is the most frequent schedule in this set
- The 1,000 sq ft claim cannot be checked against any manufacturer figure
Skip this ifyou want to verify the size claim before you buy. Nothing Canopy publishes lets you do that.
The arithmetic
There is none to do. This maker publishes no tank capacity, no output and no run time, so there is no figure of its own to check its coverage claim against. That is the finding.

Questions people actually ask
What size humidifier do I need for an apartment?
Size the space you will actually close off rather than the whole dwelling. A 500 square foot apartment at an 8 foot ceiling works out to about 1.69 gallons a day, which is more than any single plug-in unit in our set delivers - so most people should humidify the bedroom with the door shut and accept a drier hallway.
Will a humidifier damage my apartment windows?
It can, and the mechanism is condensation rather than the humidifier itself. Older apartment glazing is often the coldest surface in the room, so moisture collects there first. If water is forming on the glass, the room is too humid for that window - turn it down. The EPA puts the sensible indoor band at 30 to 50 percent relative humidity.
What is the quietest humidifier for a studio apartment?
An ultrasonic unit, because there is no fan. The Levoit Classic 160 is rated at under 28 dB at maximum mist and the Classic 300S at 30 dB or less. Evaporative units have a fan by definition - the Superior 6000S publishes 28 to 45 dB - so they are a poor fit for a room you sleep in with shared walls.
Can one humidifier do a whole apartment?
Usually not, and this is the most common disappointment in the category. An 800 square foot apartment needs roughly 2.7 gallons a day at our derived rate, and no single plug-in unit here reliably delivers that. Humidify one room properly instead of the whole place badly.
