The install is the number everyone quotes. The interesting arithmetic is what happens afterwards, when one machine with no reservoir replaces three with tanks that have to be emptied daily.

We are going to be straight about the limits of this page up front. We cannot tell you what a whole-house humidifier costs to install, because installed HVAC pricing is local, quoted, and varies with the state of your plenum and your plumbing. Anybody publishing a national figure for it is estimating. What we can do is the part nobody does: the ownership arithmetic after the install.

What the ducted unit replaces

Start from capacity, because that is what makes this a real comparison rather than a preference. The Aprilaire 700 publishes 18 gallons a day against a stated 5,300 square feet, cited to AHRI Guideline F. The largest published portable output in our set is the Vornado Evap40 at 4 gallons a day.

One or two consumables against sixteen, for the only pair where both makers actually publish an interval. That is an order of magnitude, and it is not marketing: it follows from the mechanism. A ducted unit is plumbed to the supply and drains to waste, so mineral-laden water leaves the building instead of accumulating in a wick. The electricity is a wash

The Aprilaire 700 runs on a 24 VAC transformer and its draw is negligible against household heating. Four cool-mist portables at 26 to 30 watts each, running continuously through a season, come to around a hundred dollars at the US average rate of 18.34 cents per kWh. Neither figure is going to decide this purchase, and we would rather say so than dress it up as a saving.

What you are actually buying, and what disqualifies you

The genuine advantages are capacity, distribution and the absence of a reservoir. The genuine costs are the install and the constraints, and the constraints are absolute rather than negotiable:

  • You need ducted forced-air heating. Radiators, hot-water baseboard, mini-splits and electric panel heaters all disqualify you outright. There is no air stream to humidify.
  • You need a water supply and a drain within reach of the plenum.
  • You probably need an installer, unless you are comfortable cutting an opening in a furnace plenum and making a saddle-valve connection.
  • You need to own the house.
  • It only humidifies while air is moving. On a mild day when the furnace barely cycles, it barely runs. A portable does not care what the heating is doing.
  • It wastes water. The drain that keeps it clean sends water down it.

The middle option people forget

A console. The AIRCARE MA1201 in our picks is a 3.6-gallon evaporative unit on casters with four speeds, and the Levoit Superior 6000S is a 6-gallon collapsible one with a drying mode. Neither approaches 18 gallons a day on published figures, but both move far more water than a bedroom unit, and neither needs a plumber, a duct or a landlord's permission.

If your requirement is in the six-to-twelve-gallons-a-day band, a console or two is very often the right answer, and it is the answer nobody sells you because there is no install margin in it. The capacity decision is laid out on whole house vs room.

This is the reference point for the whole site. Aprilaire is the only maker in our set that publishes a capacity in gallons per day and a coverage in square feet together, and cites the residential sizing standard as the basis for pairing them. Three of its models do it consistently: 12 gal/day to 3,600 sq ft, 17 to 5,000, and 18 to 5,300. Those three pairs are where our 296 square feet per gallon per day comes from.

Everything else follows from the fact that it drains. There is no reservoir, so there is no standing water, so the pink film and the mold that dominate portable-humidifier ownership simply do not arise. The Water Panel goes once or twice a heating season instead of a wick every 30 to 60 days, which changes the recurring cost by an order of magnitude.

The honest counterweight is that this is not a purchase, it is a project. It mounts in ductwork, it needs a water line and a drain, it needs a humidistat and an outdoor sensor, and unless you are comfortable cutting into a plenum it needs a contractor. Pick 2 · Moving serious water without touching the ductwork

AIRCARE MA1201 Console

A 3.6-gallon console on casters with four speeds and a full-size SuperWick. The nearest thing to a whole-house humidifier you can plug in.

This one needs care, because the two published figures describe opposite ends of the machine and AIRCARE prints neither of the numbers that would join them up. A 3.6-gallon tank lasting 36 hours is 2.4 gallons a day, or about 710 square feet. Covering the claimed 3,600 square feet would take roughly 12.2 gallons a day, at which rate the same tank empties in about seven hours.

Both can be true at once: 36 hours will be the lowest of the four fan speeds and 3,600 square feet the highest. The problem is that the maker publishes the endurance of one setting and the coverage of another and no output figure at all, so nothing on the page lets a buyer connect them. Retail listings do quote 12 gallons a day; we are not treating a retailer's number as a manufacturer specification.

Taken on its own terms it is a lot of machine. Four speeds, casters, a detachable bottle you fill at a tap rather than carrying the whole unit, and a full-size SuperWick that catches minerals instead of dispersing them. Size it by the setting you will actually run, and expect to refill it daily if that setting is a high one.

Six gallons, evaporative, and a Dry Mode that dries the wicks between runs. The 3,000 sq ft claim needs five times the output its own run time implies.

Six gallons over 72 hours is two gallons a day, which covers about 590 square feet. The box says 3,000. To actually hold humidity across 3,000 square feet this unit would need to move a little over ten gallons a day, and at that rate its six-gallon reservoir would run dry in about fourteen hours. Both numbers describe the machine; only one describes it at a time, and the maker publishes no figure that reconciles them.

Dry Mode is the genuinely good idea here and it deserves credit. A wet wick sitting in a warm room is the substrate for everything the EPA warns about, and a fan cycle that dries the wicks between runs attacks that problem directly rather than adding an antimicrobial coating and hoping. It also extends wick life, which is the recurring cost.

Thirty watts to move two gallons a day is efficient, and mist-free operation means the minerals stay in the wicks rather than settling on your furniture. If you can live with a coverage claim you should mentally divide by five, this is a well-made machine.

Questions people actually ask

How much does a whole house humidifier cost?

We do not publish an installed price, because HVAC installation is quoted locally and varies with your plenum, your plumbing and your contractor. Anybody giving you a national figure is estimating. What we can tell you is the ownership cost: one to two Water Panels per heating season for the Aprilaire 700, against sixteen filters for four Canopy portables at their published 45-day interval.

Are whole house humidifiers cheaper than portable ones?

Far cheaper to run and maintain, once installed. The Aprilaire 700 uses one or two Water Panels a heating season and has no reservoir to empty, clean or refill. Four portables of equivalent capacity would need about 730 individual acts of maintenance across the same season.

How many portable humidifiers equal a whole house unit?

About four and a half, on published output. The Aprilaire 700 publishes 18 gallons a day; the largest published portable output in our set is 4 gallons a day from the Vornado Evap40. That means four or five tanks filled daily and four or five wicks on a schedule.

Can you install a whole house humidifier yourself?

It requires cutting an opening in a furnace plenum, making a water connection, running a drain and wiring a 24 VAC transformer and humidistat. Some people are comfortable with all of that; most are not, and getting the plenum opening wrong is expensive.

Do whole house humidifiers work with any heating system?

No. They need ducted forced-air heating to put moisture into. Hot-water baseboard, radiators, mini-splits and electric panel heating all rule it out, and none of those is a fixable objection.
